Ryan Garcia Channels Inner Tyson, Loses Outer Grip on Reality

Ryan Garcia is taking a whole new level of crazy in his comments today about his plans for WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney on April 20th. His comments sound unhinged, almost comical, suggesting that he views this match as more of a streetfight than a boxing match.

Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) intends to bring the war to Haney (31-0, 15 KOs), potentially using Mike Tyson-level tactics with bitting, potentially turning it into a brawl along the same lines as Iron Mike’s press conference with Lennox Lewis on January 22, 2002. That was a press conference where Tyson and Lewis wrestled on the floor.

Highlights from Garcia’s Meltdown:

  • “You’ll need the army to stop me from attacking Haney!”
  • “This ain’t even a fight, it’s a beatdown!”
  • “I might not stop hitting him even when he’s down!”

Yikes. Someone might want to check if Ryan mistakenly switched his pre-workout smoothie with a gallon of pure rage. Is it real on Ryan’s part, or just part of the promotional hype?

If Garcia is serious, it would be a good idea for the event organizers to have security on hand for the next press conference.

There’s nothing wrong with some theatrics now and then, but this isn’t simple trash talk. Kingry’s remarks are a red flag that we could have problems at the final press conference or weigh-in the week of his fight with Haney.

When Trash Talk Turns Toxic

If Ryan hits Haney while he’s down during the fight, he could lose a point and be disqualified for the foul. Maybe that doesn’t bother Ryan because there would be a rematch, and it would make tons of money for him and Haney.

It might even be better if it went down the line because it would give a good excuse for a second clash between them. This isn’t WWE, Ryan. What happened to professionalism or, dare we ask, your sanity? Is this a cry for help?
