Terence Crawford vs. Tim Tszyu: Undisputed 154 Showdown Brewing

By melo - 01/17/2024 - Comments

Trainer Bernie Davis, aka ‘BernieTha Boxer,’ says Terence Crawford could be challenging unbeaten WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu for his title this year in a mega-fight.

Crawford’s rematch with Errol Spence Jr. has gone by the wayside, with the eye problems that the Texas native suffered last year.

So, Terence (40-0, 31 KOs) is moving on to what’s next, and that could be a title fight against Tszyu (24-0, 17 KOs).

There have been rumors that the Saudis are potentially interested in staging the Crawford vs. Tszyu contest, which would be ideal for both fighters. Having Crawford & Tszyu battle under the lights in the desert in Saudi Arabia would be outstanding.

Undisputed 154 on the Horizon?

With Crawford’s ambition and talent, shooting for the 154-lb undisputed is a worthy goal, and one that is achievable in a short period, potentially in 2024 if he moves quickly from Tszyu to WBA/WBC champ Jermell Charlo, and then for the IBF belt.

If the Saudis get involved, these fights could happen quickly for Crawford this year, with him moving rapidly to scoop up all four belts at 154 to cement his legacy and fatten his bank account.

Becoming a three-division undisputed champion this year would increase Crawford’s chances of getting the massive fight against four-belt champion Canelo Alvarez in 2025.

Canelo wouldn’t be able to resist taking on Crawford if he could become a three-division undisputed champ because he would have the opportunity to knock him down a peg like he just did with Jermell Charlo.

Tszyu’s Rising Star

Tim Tszyu’s popularity has increased rapidly since last year, defeating Brian Mendoza and Tony Harrison after former undisputed champion Jermell Charlo chose to go in another direction to face Canelo.

Beating Crawford would be a massive statement for Tszyu, who needs a victory over a name fighter to transform him into a worldwide star, not just an attraction for Australian boxing fans.

What we don’t know is if Crawford’s victory over Spence has blown his purse expectations out of proportion, spoiling him and making him think that all of his fights from now on should pay the same.

That’s not realistic, and you would hope that the 36-year-old Crawford isn’t deluded into thinking that way. Spence was a superstar when Crawford fought him, and that’s why the fight paid off so well.  Tsyzu isn’t a big star in the U.S., but he has a nice following.
