Boyle Heights’ own unstoppable force, Omar Trinidad, with a record at (15-0-1, 11 KOs), threw down in grand style, halting Jose ‘El Mudo’ Perez, hailing from Gardena with a more earthbound (11-3-2, 5 KOs), in a show-stopping eighth-round finale. This rumble took place under the bright lights of the jam-packed Commerce Casino Events Center in Los Angeles, turning up the heat on their local feud and bagging Trinidad the shiny WBC Continental Americas Title for his troubles.
The brawl, masterminded by Tom Loeffler’s 360 Promotions, was the cherry on top of a knockout evening, all part of the Hollywood Fight Nights saga went global thanks to UFC FIGHT PASS.
Perez, slippery as an eel, switched stances like a disco dancer in the early rounds, trying to throw Trinidad off his rhythm. But when they got down to brass tacks, trading blows up close, they had the crowd on their feet, eating up the action spoonful by spoonful.
Come the seventh, Trinidad landed a cheeky check left hook that sent Perez for a quick nap on the mat. By the eighth, Perez was tasting canvas again, thanks to a storm of punches from Trinidad, prompting the ref, Gerard White, to call time on this dance at the 1:07 mark.
In the co-main scrap, Eduardo Perez, Inglewood’s own, eked out a nail-biter of a split decision over Jose Manuel Gomez after six rounds of back-and-forth in the super welterweight clash. The judges were split, but two of them fancied Perez’s work, scoring it 58-56 in his favor.
Adan Ochoa in the super featherweight division bounced back with a vengeance, stopping John Mark Alimane cold in the second round, leaving Alimane wisely choosing to stay put rather than face more music in the third.
Lightweight David Romero kept his record as clean as a hound’s tooth, schooling Luciano Ramos over six rounds for a unanimous nod from the judges, who all saw it 60-51, thanks to a couple of point deductions against Ramos for some naughty business.
Brook Sibrian, in the female flyweight division, showed Nikkia Williams the door at the 1:29 mark of the third round, marking a brisk finish to an exciting encounter.
New kid on the block, Abel Mejia, sailed through a four-rounder against Luis Montellano, convincing the judges with scores of 40-36 and a pair of 39-37s, all in his favor.
Kicking off the festivities, Guadalupe Medina kept her record spotless with a majority decision win over Lilian Almarez in a four-round flyweight tussle, with scores that had one judge unable to pick a side, scoring it 38-38, while another was all in for Medina at 40-36.
