Benavidez Roasts Munguia Again for Ducking Him

David Benavidez is continuing to roast Jaime Munguia for recently ducking him last year in his moment of glory after his ninth-round TKO win over John Ryder last Saturday night in their main event clash on DAZN at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Benavidez Feels Snubbed

Benavidez is annoyed that Munguia chose to fight Ryder instead of himself and views that as a weak move. Munguia knows his limitations, so he’s fighting guys like 38-year-old Sergiy Derevyanchenko and 35-year-old Ryder.

If Munguia had confidence, he wouldn’t be fighting older guys and facing the best. He’s not doing that, but the boxing public is giving him a pass. They’re okay with Munguia fighting Ryder instead of the killers.

At this point, hardcore fans would be happy if Munguia at least fought someone like Christian Mbilli because he would be a major step up from the opposition he’s been facing during his 11-year career.

Fans Suspect Canelo-Focused Strategy

It’s possible that Benavidez was never seriously considered for the Munguia clash. Fans widely believe that Munguia’s management focuses entirely on getting the Canelo Alvarez cash-out fight, which would preclude them from putting him in with any risky opponents.

Benavidez and David Morrell Jr. would be ultra-risky fights for Munguia. In contrast, Ryder was a no-risk fight, a gimme for Munguia. Hence, he got picked out for Jaime’s headliner clash last Saturday night at the Footprint Center.

WBC interim super middleweight champion Benavidez is picking the right time to drizzle on Munguia’s parade after his big win over the old veteran gatekeeper Ryder (32-7, 18 KOs).

The victory impressed many casual boxing fans, who believed he’d beaten an elite 168-pounder to show that he was ready for the ultimate test against undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.

The Second Sting from Benavidez

“Before I fought [Demetrius] Andrade, we were in negotiations with [Jaime] Munguia for two months back and forth, and then after two weeks of negotiations, they said they didn’t want to take the fight. So what do you guys call that?” said David Benavidez on social media about Jaime Munguia ducking a fight against him in 2023.

This is the second stinging barb that Benavidez has made towards Munguia since his win last night against Ryder.

“This is an easy knockout. That’s why they ducked me,” said David Benavidez on social media moments after Munguia’s win over Ryder.
