Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (38-6-1, 20 KOs) wants a title shot against IBF welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis next after his one-sided ten round unanimous decision against Andre Berto (32-6, 24 KOs) in their rematch last Saturday night at The Armory in Minneapolis.
Yesterday’s ‘Ghost’ Guerrero wants a fight with Boots, but is he willing to earn the title shot by beating one of the killers in the welterweight division? Defeating Berto isn’t enough for Guerrero to be given a title shot against Ennis.
If Guerrero is serious about wanting a title shot against Boots, he should prove himself by beating one of these contenders:
– Roiman Villa
– Giovani Santillan
– Alexis Rocha
– Keith Thurman
– Conor Benn
Boots would take a lot of criticism if he were to defend against Guerrero, as he’s not ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies and is largely viewed as yesterday’s news, a fighter that has been washed since his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013.
Guerrero looked old & past it last night against Berto, clinching frequently and using the same mauling tactics that he employed in their first fight in 2012. The judges scored it 98-92, 98-92 and 99-91. The fight for the 40-year-old Guerrero was his first since his old timers match against ‘Vicious’ Victor Ortiz in 2021.
Initially, it was thought that Guerrero was joking about wanting to challenge Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) for his title, but after the fight, he reiterated that he wanted to face him.
“I know that Berto has wanted his get-back on everybody, and he tried tonight,” said Robert ‘The Ghost’ Guerrero to Fighthype. “I think I surprised him when I came out and boxed him. I think he thought that I was going to put pressure on him like I did the first time [in 2012] and bang with him.
“It seemed like every time we were on the ropes, that’s when he was on his game. Definitely,” said Guerrero when asked if he was serious about wanting a title shot. “Bring him on down. Guerrero never shies away from any fight,” said ‘The Ghost’ when asked if he’d like to fight IBF welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis next.
There wouldn’t be any fan interest in a fight between Boots and Guerrero. The fight would be viewed as a circus match, and it wouldn’t sell. With PBC moving its operations from Showtime to Amazon Prime Video PPV, it’s important that the events they put on are ones that fans will buy.
Unfortunately for Guerrero, fans wouldn’t be interested in him Boots fight because he’s irrelevant, as he’s done nothing with his career in the last ten years.
“He [Boots] is a sharp, slick, smooth, and incredible fighter. That’s why he’s a champion,” said Guerrero. “I feel great. Why not? He’s definitely as good as he says he is. It’s about getting that opportunity and showcasing it.
“I know he’s never been pressed hard,” said Guerrero about Ennis. “He’s always had guys that boxed in front of him, and he outguns them. I would love to get that fight if it happens. Talent-wise, he might be. It’s just a matter of him showcasing,” said Guerrero when asked if Boots Ennis is as talented as Floyd Mayweather Jr.
What Guerrero should do, if he doesn’t want to fight contenders to get ranked, is go the exhibition route. He can make good money fighting older retired fighters, and the older fans might be tempted to watch.
