Keith Thurman: “My bank account is thirsty,” wants Spence – Crawford winner

By Dan Ambrose: Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman came out of the woodwork today, complaining about his bank account being “thirsty,” saying that he wants the winner of Saturday’s Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Last week, the out-of-work Thurman,  34, had said he would make a big announcement about his next fight during the Spence-Crawford weigh-in.

It looks like those plans have changed, and it now looks like Thurman is hoping to weasel a fight against the winner or loser of Saturday’s mega-bout.

That would be a sad statement about boxing if Thurman gets his wish by fighting Spence or Crawford next because he’s done nothing to deserve a fight with either.

Thurman has fought just once in the last four years, and that was against the former light welterweight champion Mario Barrios, who isn’t one of the relevant fighters at 147.

Yeah, it’s the lazy way of trying to share the ring with one of those stars, but Thurman lost his ambition to stay active long ago. He’s only had three fights in the last six years since 2017.

Ideally, Thurman should agree to fight Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, and the winner faces Spence or Crawford. However, Thurman dismissed that idea today, saying that Boots is beneath him, not having on the level of what he achieved years ago.

“I’ll take winners, I’ll take losers. I want checks. My bank account is thirsty, baby,” said a shrill-sounding Keith Thurman to the media on Friday at the weigh-in for the Errol Spence Jr vs. Terence Crawford fight.

“What about him? He’s down here, and I have been up here,” said Thurman dismissing a question about whether he’d be interested in fighting Jaron ‘Boot’ Ennis.

It doesn’t seem too promising that Thurman will be able to hustle a fight with the Spence vs. Crawford contest winner.

If Thurman was willing to return to work and move up to 154, he could potentially get a shot at one of those two stars in a year or two, depending on how things go for him at junior middleweight.

Sounding hard up for money, Thurman’s talk of his bank account needing to be filled reinforces the rumors he’s broke, having blown the money he made in his last fight against Mario Barrios many moons ago.

What did Thurman do with all the money he made from his fight with Manny Pacquiao in 2019? That was a healthy payday for Thurman, and it’s hard to believe that he blew through it all in just four years.
