By Mark Eisner: Jaime Munguia (42-0, 32 KOs) edged  Sergiy Derevyanchenko (14-4, 10 KOs) by a close 12 round unanimous decision in super middleweight action on Saturday night at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California. Munguia, 26, pulled out the victory with a 12th round body shot knockdown.

Munguia was hurt repeatedly in the early rounds by Derevyanchenko, and it looked like he was on his way to losing.

Undercard  results

  • Super middleweight contender Shane Mosley Jr (20-4, 11 KOs) stopped D’Mitrius Ballard (21-2-1, 13 KOs) in the seventh round of a competitive fight. Using a straight arm all night, Mosley set Baallard up by keeping his head in place for a right hand that stunned him. Mosley Jr, 32, then flurried on the hurt Ballard while he was trapped against the rope. The referee then stepped in and halted the contest. Ballard was knocked down in the fifth round from a right hand from Mosley Jr. The time of the stoppage was at 1:42 of round seven. Ballard had been knocked out in the third round last year by Munguia. It’s believed that Golden Boy Promotions will use Mosley Jr as Munguia’s next opponent if they can’t get Gennadiy Golovkin or Jermall Charlo to fight him.
  • In the fight of the night, female super bantamweight Mayeli Flores (10-1-1, 3 KOs) defeated Mariana ‘Barbie’ Juarez (55-13-4, 19 KOs) by a ten round unanimous decision in a war. The scores were 79-73, 79-73, and 80-72. The 43-year-old Juarez took a lot of punishment from the 5’11”, 31-year-old chunky Flores throughout the fight. In each round, Juarez would back up and get pummeled by Flores. Juarez’s nose looked in bad shape by the fifth round, and it was a surprise that the contest wasn’t halted because she took a beating.
  • Unbeaten featherweight prospect Jorge Chavez (7-0, 5 KO’s) defeated Christian Lorenzo (3-5, 1 KO) by a six round unanimous decision. The scores were 60-54, 60-54, and 60-54.
  • Junior middleweight prospect Anthony Saldivar (4-0, 2 KO) stopped Jerome Clayton (2-2-1, 2 KOs) in the second round. Clayton was dropped three in the second before referee Jack Reiss stepped in to halt the massacre at 2:01.

Preview: Jaime Munguia takes a small step up in competition tonight against middleweight contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko in a bout live on DAZN in the 168-lb weight division. Tonight’s event starts at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Munguia (41-0, 33 KOs) wants to look good against the former three-time world title challenger Derevyanchenko (14-4, 10 KOs) to get the bigger fights that have eluded him during the last ten years.

If Munguia comes out victorious, he wants to face one of these talented fighters next: Gennadiy Golovkin, Jermall Charlo, or David Benavidez.

It would be easier for Munguia to get fights against these fighters: Janibek Alimkhanuly, Carlos Adames, or Demetrius Andrade.

Those are tough opponents that Munguia could lose to, which is why his promoters at Golden Boy won’t bother going in that direction. The risk is too high and his previous opposition too poor to have prepared him to beat those guys.

“When he steps in the ring, he will have one of the most accomplished opponents of his career in front of him. Sergiy Derevyanchenko is a two time middleweight World title challenger, who has lost razor-close decisions to Daniel Jacobs and Gennady Golovkin and most recently took a majority decision defeat to Carlos Adames,” said Chris Mannix to JABS at DAZN.

“Fans have been waiting for Jaime Munguia to step up. Is he doing that in this fight?”

“No, and you know Sergiy Derevyanchenko is a very tough fighter. He’s a technician. That’s what they call him,” said Sergio Moraa. “He’s given everyone that he fights competition, and no one stops him.

“All the names you just mentioned. You can throw Charlo in there, and they couldn’t stop him because he knows how to fight he knows how to fight small. He’s a strong fighter, and he has that amateur pedigree, but he’s 37 years old.

“He’s lost four of his last six. Munguia needs to step up to a quality uh level opponent. We know who those fighters are. They’re unbeaten fighters at middleweight or if you are going to beat somebody that already has a loss to GGG.

“These are tough fights to make, so I get why he’s fighting a Sergiy
Derevyanchenko. On paper, Derevyanchenko is going to be a step up and the most dangerous opponent on his resume, but if you look deeper into those numbers, it’s still the same old type of fighter that
Munguia has been facing.

“World title challengers that haven’t become champions. We’re talking about Tureano Johnsons of the world, the Spike O’Sullivans. That doesn’t cut it, man.

“We want this kid, this man at 26 years old, undefeated with over 40 fights to take that big step forward, but if those names aren’t available, the Andrades, the Charlo, the Golovkins, then Sergiy Derevyanchenko will do.”

“Yeah, I’m going to say it is a step up, but it’s not a big enough step up to matter,” said Mannix. “Some of the names you mentioned. Tureano Johnson and you can throw Jimmy Kelly into that mix. These guys are not threatening opponents.

“Derevyanchenko, at least, is a little bit interesting because he has fought extremely well at the highest of levels. You can make an argument that Derevyanchenko beat Daniel Jacobs a few years ago for the middleweight title.

“I scored the fight against Gennady Golovkin for Derevyanchenko. the Adames fight was a majority decision. So when he has faced top guys, he has done pretty well,” said Mannix.
