Ryan Garcia must “put damage early on Tank” says Roy Jones Jr

By Adam Baskin: Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr says Ryan Garcia must start early on Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, putting “damage” on him for him to have a chance of winning on April 22nd in their mega-money fight on Showtime PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Jones feels that if Ryan (23-0, 19 KOs) can punish the unbeaten Gervonta (28-0, 26 KOs) in the first half of the contest, he can then take advantage of that in the later rounds to pull off the victory.

If Ryan puts some damage on Tank Davis early, he can finish off the partially punch-drunk Baltimore native in the later rounds and leave him on the canvas after nailing him with a check hook to the head.

“I think it’s an even good fight. Ryan Garcia has a very good chance in that fight to win,” former multi-division world champion Roy Jones Jr said to The DAZN Boxing Show about the April 22nd mega-fight between Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and the Golden Boy-promoted underdog Ryan ‘Kingry’ Garcia at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“Ryan has to start early and put damage on ‘Tank’ before the sixth, seventh, eighth round because if you damage ‘Tank’ early, it will be better for him going into the long run of the fight,” said Jones Jr.

Tank Davis using weight stipulations on Ryan

Gervonta shows signs of insecurity by using a catchweight of 136 lbs and a 10-lb rehydration clause to get an advantage over Ryan Garcia. That doesn’t make sense for Tank Davis to want to game the system for his fight with Kingry because he says the 24-year-old Garcia is one-dimensional and ONLY has a left hook.

If Tank is supposed to be this monster fighter, why does he want a weight advantage over Ryan? You got to wonder if Tank’s former promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr was the one that told him to use his A-side pull to add a 136-lb catchweight AND a 10-lb rehydration clause with an upper limit of 146 lbs for good measure.

Ryan has to come down to near Tank’s weight, and then he has the rehydration stipulation to deal with.

It shouldn’t matter what Ryan rehydrates to after he makes the 136-lb handicap weight for Tank’s fight, but to add a 10-lb rehydration limit along with that is a real sign of insecurity for Gervolnta.
