Gervonta Tank Davis says he’s “not signed” to anybody

By Brian Webber: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis revealed last night that he’s no longer signed to anybody right now. The three-division world champion Tank (27-0, 25 KOs) made it clear that he wants to take his “talent” to another promoter.

If Tank, 27, is indeed a promotional free agent, you can imagine the interest from promoters from Matchroom Boxing, Top Rank, and Golden Boy Promotions.

I’m not signed to them anymore, so I can’t be talking about them,” said Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis on Twitter, making it clear that he’s a promotional free agent.

I need to take my talent somewhere else. Yeah, they playing games.”

If Eddie Hearn can afford to sign Tank, it would be interesting to see what type of fights he could line up. Being signed with Hearn would arguably make it easier for Tank Davis to fight Ryan Garcia, as he fights on the same network on DAZN.

It might be better in the long run for Tank to sign with a promoter that works with ESPN because that would give him a lot of options.

Currently, Top Rank has Devin Haney, Shakur Stevenson, and Vasyl Lomachenko signed with them. Whether Tank is willing to fight any or all of those fighters is unclear. But if he wants to become the #1 guy in the 135-lb division and make a ton of money in the process, it would be in Tank’s best interest to fight Haney, Stevenson, and Lomachenko.

If Tank were to stay with Mayweather Promotions, it’s questionable whether he would fight any of those three fighters, excluding him from proving that he’s the best in the division.

Tank has been signed with Mayweather Promotions, and interestingly, he’s become a star under their watch without fighting any popular elite fighters.

Up until now, arguably the biggest name on Tank’s resume on his nine-year professional resume is Leo Santa Cruz. The other former world champions Tank Davis has fought are from this list:

  • Mario Barrios
  • Yuriorkis Gamboa
  • Hugo Ruiz

You can only imagine how big of a star the unbeaten Baltimore native Gervonta would be if he had fought other big names in the last nine years instead of less popular fighters.

With boxing, it’s important that a fighter sign with a promoter that has all the top fighters signed to them in a particular weight class because it makes it much easier to put the fights together.
