Devin Haney Doubts Frank Martin’s Ability to Upset Tank Davis

Devin Haney believes Frank Martin will give WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis a tough fight when they meet in June. The fight is rumored to be taking place in Texas.

Haney feels that the 29-year-old Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) will try and get the respect of Tank Davis (29-0, 27 KOs), but ultimately, the experience and skills will lead to the champion winning.

Experience Will Be Key

“I think Tank beats him. We haven’t seen Frank Martin at the highest level at the elite level. I’m not saying that he’s not elite. We just haven’t seen,” said Devin Haney to Fighthype’s YouTube channel, predicting Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis will defeat Frank Martin in their fight in June.

Martin had massive problems in his last fight against fringe contender Artem Harutyunyan last July. He squeaked out a 12-round decision victory in a contest that he had been losing through the first eight rounds. That performance showed that Martin wasn’t ready for elite-level competition.

“Do I think he’s [Martin] going to go in there and lay down? No. I think he’ll go in there and try to get his respect, and he will fight back. But I think Tank has the experience and skills and will be victorious,” said Haney.

Martin May Struggle with Davis’s Speed

Some boxing fans believe that Martin is overmuscled and puts too much emphasis on weight training in his fight preparation. Like many musclebound fighters, Martin is slow and robotic due to his muscles, which could hurt his chances of beating Tank, who is more athletic and much faster.

“But will it be easy? I can’t say. Do I think that Frank Martin will go in there and show that he’s a contender? Yes,” said Haney.

Explosive Undercard

The undercard of Tank vs. Martin will reportedly feature super middleweight contender David Benavidez fighting Oleksandr Gvozyk in a WBC light heavyweight title eliminator.

Also, lightweight contender Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela will fight Edwin De Los Santos in a contest that could steal the show.
