Amir Khan wants Anthony Joshua to “Jump on” Oleksandr Usyk “early”
By Charles Brun: Amir Khan believes he’s got the perfect solution on how Anthony Joshua can beat the crafty Oleksandr Usyk next week in their rematch on August 20th at the Jeddah Superdome, Saudi Arabia.
Amir wants Joshua to “jump” on Usyk from the opening bell and try and overwhelm him with his size & power. To be sure, it’s a desperate all-or-nothing type of approach to the fight, and it’s unlikely to pay off for AJ.
If Joshua does choose to attack Usyk in a blitzkrieg-type manner, it could result in AJ gassing out and being helpless against him from the first round.
Joshua’s gas tank is so poor that he’s capable of fading after one round. Let me be the first to say that it won’t be good for Joshua if he empties his tank in the first round due to him following Khan’s game plan.
“He’s a technician; his boxing IQ is the best out there, and how accurate he is is what wins him fights,” said Amir Khan to talkSPORT about Oleksandr Usyk.
“What AJ has to do is just jump on him early. AJ’s got that puncher’s chance as well,” Khan continued.
If this is the best that Khan and AJ’s new trainer Robert Garcia can come up with for Joshua to beat Usyk, that’s not good.
Khan says Usyk told him that he put 15 kilos on in training for his rematch with Joshua (24-2, 22 KOs). What Usyk left out is the 22 lbs that he lost while defending his country in the war.
In other words, the 33 lbs that Usyk has packed on won’t be in addition to the 221 lbs for the first Joshua match. Given that Usyk lost 22 lbs in the war, the 33 lbs he’s put on should put him in the low 230s.
“When it comes to boxing him, AJ’s a good boxer, he’s an Olympic champion, but Usyk is a superior boxer,” said Khan.
“You can’t really beat him when it comes down to tactics, technique, or boxing skills. AJ will make a mistake if he tries to box him again.
“You know how some people put on weight, and they look a bit soft, but he was solid. He looked strong and put the weight on well,” Khan said about Usyk.
