Marcos Maidana showing off his new Mike Tyson moves
By Aragon Garcia: Marcos Maidana showed off his new Mike Tyson moves in the beginning of his training camp to restart his boxing career after 4 long years out of the ring. Maidana (35-5, 31 KOs) is training at the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The 35-year-old Maidana has got some weight to lose, but he’s looking very good for a fighter that has been inactive since 2014. Maidana has already lost a lot of weight from the photos that we saw of him a few months ago. He looks to be at least 25 lbs lighter.
Maidana’s right hand punching power looks as lethal as ever. Each time he throws that right hand, you can tells it’s filled with massive power. There’s no drop off from the power that Maidana had before he retired from boxing in 2014. If anything, Maidana might be punching harder than before. He’s gotten older, and the added weight that he’s put on seems to added to his power. Maidana doesn’t plan on fighting at middleweight though. He’s going to have to lose weight slowly so that his power doesn’t disappear as he gets close to his old fighting weight in the mid-160s. Maidana fought in the 140 and 147 lb weight classes, but he would rehydrate to the 160s.
The moves that Maidana is using is Tyson-esque, and it’s gong to be a thrill for the fans to see him use them when he turns to the ring for his comeback. It’s thought that Maidana might possibly fight briefly at middleweight before reducing his weight down to 154 and then finally 147 to go after the big money fights against Adrien Broner, Manny Pacquiao, Errol Spence Jr. and Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman. There will be a lot of interest from fans in seeing Maidana and Broner face each other again. Maidana gave Broner his first career loss in 2013, and took a lot a lot of the air out of his career in knocking him down twice in winning a 12 round unanimous decision. Broner hasn’t looked the same since then.
Maidana is working out with Pacquiao’s former strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza to lose the weight that he’s put on during his four-year layoff, and to build up his conditioning to get him ready for his return. Ariza is a master at getting fighters in great shape, and he should be able to get Maidana back down to his old weight within three or four months, perhaps even sooner than that. Ariza will help Maidana lose the weight without sacrificing muscle. Right now, Maidana would be a nightmare for anyone at 147 if he could lose the fat, and keep the muscle that he has on him.
If Mayweather is interested in fighting Maidana again, the fans wouldn’t argue about that. Those two fighters were involved in two exciting contests in 2014 with a lot of boxing fans believing that Maidana was robbed in their first fight.
