By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) is about to turn 30 in May and has been fighting in the pro ranks for the last 12 years. Despite his advanced age and a long career in the sport, Brook has never had one meaningful fight other than his clinch-filled win over Shawn Porter in 2014.

Without having ever proven himself to be a super talent, Brook says he believes he’s the best fighter in the 147lb division. The only way that Brook is going to be able to test his belief is for him and his promoter Eddie Hearn to stop fighting fodder opposition like Kevin Bizier (25-2, 17 KOs), who Brook will be fighting this Saturday night on March 26 at the Sheffield Arena in Sheffield, UK.

“I believe I’m the best on the planet. I always find a way. This is me now. I’m 30 this year and I want to show the world I’m the best,” said Brook to skysports.com. “I’ve got to look good in this fight. I always find a way. This is me now. I’m 30 this year and I want to show the world I’m the best and that I’m ready for those big, big fights.”

Yeah, Brook wants the big fights. His promoter Hearn is saying he wants to match Brook against Tim Bradley, even if Bradley loses to Manny Pacquiao. Some big fight that would be; Brook fighting Bradley with him coming off of a loss instead of a win.

That’s not exactly inspiring. If you’re looking to make a statement to show the boxing fans that ‘you’re the best’, it looks kind of strange if you’re fighting someone after they just lost. I mean, I don’t think Brook would get a fight against Bradley if he loses the fight against Pacquiao.

If Brook wanted a fight against Bradley under those conditions, then he would still probably need to come to the U.S to make that fight happen. If Brook tries to play power play by saying ‘I’m the champion,’ then he’s not going to get Bradley to agree to the fight.

“Saturday night it’s about breaking Bizier’s heart and then it’s about breaking his bones,” said Brook. Saturday night. Here we go. I’m the IBF champion and I need to go out there and show everybody why I’m champion.”

Brook doesn’t seem to realize that he’s in an impossible situation with the Bizier fight. It doesn’t matter how easily he beats him, the boxing world isn’t likely going to be impressed because he’s a fodder opponent in the minds of a lot of fans. They seem him as a fighter that the International Boxing Federation gave an inflated ranking to based off of wins over weak opposition.

I don’t think it matters how badly Brook beats Bizier. The fans aren’t going to make a big production out of the victory because Brook is continuing his career-long habit of facing gawd awful opposition.

Now if Brook would just do the right thing and face a talented welterweight like Errol Spence Jr., Keith Thurman or Shawn Porter, I think the fans would be very impressed with him if he actually beat one or more of them. The problem is, Brook isn’t fighting those guys. Yeah, he fought Porter, but he should have been disqualified in that fight in my opinion due to all the clinching he did.
