By Bradley Dee: In the last couple of weeks we’ve seen a lot of articles written about the super fight. We’ve seen a lot of incorrect statements of the fight being made, false claims by one side that they’ve signed contracts, VPs of networks tweeting about it, and promoters commenting on it, writers articles declaring the fight will be signed today, tomorrow, or this week.
Enough is enough. Don’t people have anything else to write about lately? We’ve got WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin fighting on Saturday night against Britain’s Martin Murray in Monte Carlo. British heavyweight contender Tyson Fury at the end of the month against Christian Hammer on February 28th at the O2 Arena in London, UK.
This super fight or any other super fight should not take months to make, but the fact that it has taken this long without an announcement should have already proven one thing, that no one should be making predictions about when this will be announced. Countless times this fight has been incorrectly advertised as being done, close to being done, or will be done on xx days. Countless writers looking to scoop the fight before it gets announced.
Not me. This article is different.
This fight is not done. I don’t know when it will be done, if it will be done, and honestly, I am so sick of it, don’t care if it does get done. It’s 5 years too late anyway. Would I watch it? Yeah, I would watch it, if it gets made. If it doesn’t I’ll go watch the rest of the great fights lined up for the next couple months on free TV. For once, we can enjoy boxing back on terrestrial television and basic cable, and they’re decent fights too in most cards. Not that I’m a huge fan of Al Haymon or anything. I think generally he lets his fighters fight soft touches, ala Adonis Stevenson fighting Sakio Bika for some odd reason instead of someone deserving. But I have to give Haymon credit for putting at least better cards together than we’re used to on Friday Night Fights. Those are generally poorly mismatched fights with unknown fighters.
Let’s get back to enjoying the sport, not the relentless articles about this fight being done or close to being done. Notice I got through a whole article without mentioning the names of the fighters? Yes, it can be done.
