Mayweather to visit UK next month

floyd5644By Scott Gilfoid: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be touring the UK next month and will be attending a sportsman dinner at the Premier suite while visiting the Reebok Stadium on June 23rd. It’s expected that WBC Silver welterweight champion Amir Khan will show up at the dinner to try and drive interest in a fight against Mayweather in May of 2015.

“I’m sure it would be very interesting and would add spice to the night if Khan turns up – and we’ve already had enquiries from them,” said Spencer Brown of EBF via Bolton News.

Khan took himself out of the running for Mayweather’s September fight by declaring that Ramadan will be taking place during that month, and there would be no way for him to physically take a fight with Mayweather on the 13th of September. Khan suggested that Mayweather can move his date to October or November to fight him. However, Mayweather hasn’t said anything in the media to lead one to believe that he’ll be doing this for Khan.

Mayweather could be facing Marcos Maidana in a rematch in September, so it probably wouldn’t matter even if Khan were available to fight him. Mayweather has the Maidana rematch, which will likely do well on pay-per-view due to the competitiveness of their fight last Saturday night.

What Khan needs to do is to face a good opponent for his next fight later this year, preferably a younger fighter instead of the older guys he’s been fighting lately. In his last two fights, Khan has faced Luis Collazo and Julio Diaz. These are two fighters that were good many years ago, but were clearly not the same fighters they once were when they fought Khan.

It’ll help Khan if he fights guys that shows that he deserves a fight against Mayweather, because right now Khan clearly doesn’t deserve the fight given the opposition he’s faced lately and his dismal record of 3-2 in his last five fights. A 3-2 record would be decent if Khan were a baseball pitcher, but this isn’t baseball; it’s boxing and a record like that is horrible to say the least and not nearly good enough for Khan to get a fight against a star like Maidana.

Khan needs to change his fighting style to become a more crowd-pleasing fighter, as in his last fight against Collazo, Khan spent much of the fight grabbing Collazo and putting him in head-locks, clinching him, pulling down on his head, and shoving him each time he’d get close to him. Khan also used nonstop movement for 12 rounds instead of standing still and staying in the pocket to fight. There’s nothing wrong with using movement, but Khan was overdoing it by moving for literally 3 minutes of every round. It was painful to watch.
