Mayweather-Maidana gloves dispute ends – Fight is on!

may40(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is saying that he’s been assured by adviser Al Haymon that the the gloves controversy between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana has ended. Mayweather will wear his Grant gloves for tonight’s fight, whereas Maidana will wear his Everlast gloves, according to Yahoo Sports. It’s unknown which type of Everlast gloves Maidana will wear though, as Mayweather already rejected the Everlast MX gloves that Maidana wanted to wear for the fight.

“Al [Haymon] assured me this is over and we’re going forward with the fight,” Schaefer said via Yahoo. Kevin Iole believes that the entire gloves dispute was little more than a ploy to throw Maidana off of his game in order to gain an edge against him for their fight tonight. If Maidana wasn’t able to use his normal gloves, and if he were to be unsettled from the bickering, Mayweather might have an easier time beating him.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission rejected the first pair of Everlast MX gloves that Maidana wanted to use for the fight, although they approved a second pair of the same MX gloves.

Everlast CEO Neil Morton said “Floyd is the greatest fighter of my time and maybe the greatest of all-time and if he feels this is what he needs to do to gain a psychological edge, that’s fine and I have no problem with it.”

It’s not about a psychological edge for Mayweather in his reason for rejecting the first pair of gloves. Those gloves were also rejected by the Nevada Athletic Commission, and both Leonard Ellerbe from Mayweather Promotions and Schaefer checked out the gloves too and noticed a lack of what they felt was sufficient padding around the knuckles. It’s possible that there are slight variations between each pair of gloves that are produced. It just happened that the ones that Maidana was planning on using were one of the pair that had less padding than some of the others.
