Broner: I’m a main event fighter

Adrien Broner(Photo credit: Esther Lin/showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) sounded defensive at times during Thursday’s final press conference with his opponent Carlos Molina (17-1-1, 7 KO’s) for their fight on Saturday night. Broner’s fight against 2nd tier fighter Molina is buried down in the third fight from the main event on Floyd Mayweather’s fight card on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Before this fight, Broner had been a main event fighter, but his one-sided loss to Marcos Maidana last December put Broner seems to have taken some air out of his career to where he’s now on Mayweather’s undercard rather than head-lining his own fight card.

“I’m a main event fighter,” Broner said. “No disrespect to nobody on this card, I am a main event fighter. You can put Adrien Broner anywhere and [expletive] are going to come see me. They either want to see me lose or see me win.”

Broner can say that he’s a main event fighter now, but if he takes another loss to one of the other fighters that Golden Boy feeds him, he’s not going to be a main event fighter for long. Maidana was supposed to lose to Broner. That was considered a safe fight for Broner, but he proved that he didn’t have the game to beat Maidana. Now he’s been stepped back a level and put in with a fighter who hasn’t fought in over a year and a half in Carlos Molina.

This is another safe fight for Broner. If he can’t win this fight then it’s going to put Golden Boy in a position where they could be making a big mistake if they try to put Broner in as a head-liner for his next fight. Broner will likely beat Molina, but it’s anyone’s guess what Broner will be able to do at 140 without Golden Boy and Al Haymon carefully matching him. If they thrown Broner in someone guys like Lucas Matthysse, Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, we could see Broner take loss after loss. Golden Boy would then need to try and steer Broner back down to the lightweight division, because they wouldn’t be able to do anything with him at 140 of 147.
