martirosyan32By Allan Fox: This Friday night, on March 21st, #11 WBO Vanes Martirosyan (33-1-1, 21 KO’s) will be facing little known Mario Alberto Lozano (28-4, 22 KO’s) at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa, in Cabazon, California, USA. Martirosyan, 27, and Lozano will be fighting for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental light middleweight title. This should be a fairly easy fight for Martirosyan to win, as Lozano isn’t in his class and has never fought anyone even close to being as good as Martirosyan.

Martirosyan is coming off of a disappointing 12 round split decision loss to Demetrius Andrade in their fight for the vacant WBO junior middleweight title last November. The fight was a winnable one for Martirosyan, but he stopped being aggressive in the 2nd part of the bout when he appeared to run out of gas. This enabled the lanky Andrade to come on and take the fight by a narrow decision.

It wasn’t an impressive performance from Martirosyan, who showed stamina problems in the fight. We saw thing from him in his bout against Erislandy Lara in November of 2012. Martirosyan started off well and looked like he was en route to winning the fight, but he then ran out by the 7th, and Lara dominated the 7th and 8th before the fight was halted in the 9th due to a cut that Martirosyan had suffered from a head-clash.

Martirosyan needs to step it up after this win on Friday, because he can’t afford to get stuck fighting weak opposition for another 3-5 years. He recently stepped it up in facing Lara and Andrade after years of fighting no-named opposition, and he probably should have made that move 3 years before that instead of wasting so much of his career. Martirosyan has been a pro since 2005, but he’d faced literally no one all those years until his fight against Lara in 2012. Had Martirosyan been fighting quality opposition earlier in his career, he likely would have been ready for the Lara fight, but he clearly wasn’t and looked out of his elements in the 2nd part of the fight.

Lozano is coming off of a loss to Charles Hatley in his last fight in November of last year. He also has losses to Ivan Pereyra, Ruben Amezcua and Karim Mayfield.
