Mayweather-Maidana fight named “The Moment”

mayweather5By Chris Williams: Mayweather Promotions has come up with the perfect marketing name for Floyd Mayweather Jr’s May 3rd unification bout against WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) by calling it “The Moment.” This is an excellent name, and arguably just as good as “The One,” the name for Mayweather’s last fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez from last September. Having catchy names for big money fights like Mayweather-Maidana is very important, and whoever is coming up with these names is doing a good job of it.

Tickets for the Mayweather vs. Maidana fight go on sale today for their mega-fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fans will have to move quickly to get the tickets, because this is going to sellout quickly due to the high interest from fans for this match-up.

Mayweather took his time in choosing Maidana as his next opponent. He realized that Maidana is the best fight for him to catch the boxing public’s imagination compared to a fight against Britain’s Amir Khan, who has undermined himself by sitting back and not fighting after a bit of bad luck in losses to Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson. Having Maidana as his opponent will help Mayweather attract the Hispanic fans to purchase the fight on Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend.

Compared to Mayweather’s last two fights, this is going to be a much more entertaining fight because of Maidana’s come forward style of fighting, his huge heart, and his big punching power. Mayweather’s last two opponents Canelo and Robert Guerrero were unable to or unwilling to go after Mayweather the way that Miguel Cotto had in their fight in May of 2012. It looked like Canelo and Guerrero didn’t want to commit themselves to a war with Mayweather after getting hit with some sharp punches from him earlier in their fights. Maidana isn’t that way though. When he gets hit hard by Mayweather, it won’t detract him from his goal to try and hit Mayweather as hard as he can with every punch. That’s what makes Maidana such a good opponent for this fight. He’s not going to back off for a second, and he’ll bring out the best in Mayweather the same way that Cotto and Oscar De La Hoya did in the past.

Mayweather and Maidana could end up bringing in a huge number of pay-per-view buys if the fight is marketed right. Maidana needs to be available for interviews, and make things interesting by giving his thoughts about the fight. He can’t be the same reserved Maidana that we saw before his last bout against Adrien Broner. That won’t work.
