Khan offers to fight Broner on Mayweather’s May 3rd card

By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan floated a deal to Floyd Mayweather Jr. on his twitter today saying that he’ll agree to fight Adrien Broner on his next undercard on May 3rd if Mayweather will agree to fight him after he beats Broner. It’s pretty shocking that Khan is trying to wrangle a deal like that, because he probably didn’t even need to make this offer. I mean, Mayweather is likely going to give Khan the fight in September or early 2015 without Khan having to twist his arm to get the fight.

With this move by Khan, I can see Mayweather mentally scratching off Khan’s name from his list of future opponents. Why? Because Khan’s deal is one of those tit for tat type deals, and Mayweather isn’t going to let himself get roped into something like that. He’s too above a sleazy deal like this. He’s too good for this.

I wonder why Khan is stooping so low to offer Mayweather a deal like that? That just makes Khan look incredibly desperate, because if Mayweather wants to have him fight on the card, he’ll either have one Team Mayweather ask him or Golden Boy Promotions. Khan doesn’t need to be offering deals. That just makes Khan look like a control freak in trying to push for the Mayweather fight. You would think that Khan learned his lesson from last time, wouldn’t you? Khan went overboard trying to get the fight with Mayweather and ended up losing the fight. Khan snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with his campaigning for the Mayweather fight. The fight was his, and all he had to do was keep his trap shut and Mayweather likely would have given him the fight. But now Khan is doing it again by offering deals to Mayweather instead of the other way around.

Golden Boy is not going to let Khan fight Broner. It would help Mayweather’s May 3rd undercard, but it’s still not going to happen. Broner wants a rematch against Marcos Maidana, and it’s pretty obvious that Broner isn’t going to take any risky fights until he can get the rematch. He’s not going to want to fight on Mayweather’s undercard against Khan and potentially blow his chance at the Maidana rematch.

But with Khan making this offer, I wouldn’t be surprised if this puts Mayweather off completely to the idea of fighting him. Khan should know by now that Mayweather doesn’t like being pressured into something. Remember when Saul “Canelo” Alvarez wanted to get a fight against Mayweather, but he would only agree to fight Austin Trout on his undercard if he agreed to fight him next.

Mayweather wouldn’t agree to it, so Canelo chose to fight Trout off of his Showtime PPV card. Because of that, Canelo missed out on all the fans that would have seen him fight Trout on Mayweather’s undercard last May of his fight against Robert Guerrero. As it turns out, maybe it was better that fans didn’t see Canelo’s fight against Trout, because he looked horrible in that fight.
