Maidana standing by to see if Mayweather gives him the fight

maidana4356565By Scott Gilfoid: WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) is waiting to see if Floyd Mayweather Jr. will blow off the vote from his poll on his website that selected Amir Khan as the winner, and instead give the fight to Maidana. It would obviously anger Khan, who did a great job of getting his 1.4 million twitter fans to vote him into the fight, but it would be a smart move for Mayweather if he gave the fight to Maidana.

The fight date that Mayweather has chosen for his next fight on May 3rd falls on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo, and it’s not likely that he’s going to be able to get 1 million Mexican boxing fans to purchase a fight between him and Khan, even if Golden Boy Promotions loads up the undercard with Mexican fighters. The Mayweather-Maidana fight is simply the much better choice for the May 3rd date than a Mayweather-Khan fight. Maidana is from Argentina, but he’s still a better option for Mayweather if his idea for the fight is to get as many PPV buys as possible.

There would be no shame involved for Mayweather if he tells Khan ‘Sorry, but I can’t give you the fight. You won just one poll, whereas Maidana beat you in 4 other polls. It’s a numbers thing, and the fans have spoken. For my next fight, I’ll give you another shot at one of my polls, but you’ve got to win the majority of them, not just one.’

If Mayweather breaks the news to Khan like that, I’m sure fans wouldn’t criticize him at all. On the contrary, I see fans respecting Mayweather even more because he would have done the right thing by listening to the people, and not just the people that Khan told to storm the Mayweather Promotions website and vote him into the fight. At the end of the day, Maidana is the WBA welterweight champion and he’s won his last four fights, including an impressive victory over little Mayweather, Adrien Broner. While Maidana has been doing incredibly well, Khan has gone 2-2 in his last fights. In other words, Khan has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights in the last two years, and that’s just not good enough, at least in terms of the fans that voted in those 4 independent polls.

I hope Mayweather does the right thing and tells Khan to get lost, because we can’t have the quality of Mayweather’s opponents deteriorate. Mayweather has to keep his standards high and not let in the fighters that aren’t deserving in sharing the same ring with him.
