Marcos Maidana(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) is going to go after WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) this Saturday night and hit him with everything in the kitchen in an effort to take his WBA title from him in their Showtime televised fight at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Maidana wants to hit Broner frequently with everything he has in hopes that Broner will wear down from being hit so hard so frequently. Maidana doesn’t have the hand speed to match Broner, but he’s power and a good work rate that could force Broner to throw more combinations rather than his normal post shots.

Maidana said “The plan is that when I fight Broner, I am going to hit him everywhere and be busier. I’m prepared to throw many punches in the fight and pressure him. I’ve also trained to cut off the ring. It’s very important to attack the body, the arms and later the head.”

On the face of it you would think this isn’t going to be a good strategy for Maidana to try and beat Broner, because it lacks the cunning and finesse that you would think Maidana would need to win this fight. But Broner really had problems against Paulie Malignaggi last June, and Malignaggi did little more than throw a jabs and punches at Borner. That was nearly enough for Malignaggi to get the win.

It seems like Malignaggi created the blueprint in how to beat Broner by unloading on him with rapid fire machine gun shots for 12 rounds, and he wouldn’t be able to keep up with that pace. That was always thought of as the blueprint in how to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr., a fighter who also is known for being a pot shot fighter with a low work rate. But it’s never worked against him. However, Malignaggi proved that this style can work off on the Mayweather copy cat Broner, so Maidana could find success on Saturday night by doing little more than throwing nonstop shots to outwork Broner over 12 rounds. It’s going to be up to Broner to prove that he’s not vulnerable to this kind of an attack, because he definitely looked ready to be beaten last June by Malignaggi.
