Kell Brook unhappy that Khan could face Mayweather

brook7777By Scott Gilfoid: #1 IBF Kell Brook (30-0, 20 KO’s) isn’t happy that fellow Brit Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) could be getting a big money title shot against WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. next May. Brook feels that Khan doesn’t deserve the Mayweather fight and Brook doesn’t like the fact that Khan could beat him to a Mayweather fight.

It’s not academic at this point that Khan will be facing Mayweather next, so Brook might be worrying his head for no reason at all. Khan vs. Mayweather is still at the rumor stage and it may not happen. Mayweather is the type of fighter that likes to surprise the boxing public with his opponents, and Khan is just is just too predictable at this point.

If Mayweather wants to surprise someone, he’ll chose to fight Adrien Broner or Keith Thurman. I don’t think anyone would expect Mayweather to fight either of those guys next, if ever at all.

Brook – “He’s [Khan] not ranked at welterweight, never boxed at welterweight and looked rubbish in his last fight…It’s annoying that he could walk right over me into a big fight [against Mayweather]…I’ve fought all the people I’m supposed to fight to get me a world title fight.”

It looks like Brook hasn’t been keeping up with the welterweight rankings because if he had he’d notice that Khan has been ranked at #2 WBC at 147 for the entire year. Khan has fought a welterweight. In his last fight, he beat welterweight Julio Diaz by a 12 round unanimous decision. Sure, the victory was controversial, but Khan technically beat Diaz and he’s definitely a welterweight.

As far as Brook saying that he’s fought all the people that he’s supposed to fight to get a world title, I totally disagree with that. Brook hasn’t fought the guys that needs to fight to get a quick world title shot. I mean, Brook is in the position to get a world title shot at #1 at IBF, but he’s hardly fought the guys that he should have fought to get a World title shot. Look at the guys that Brook has fought in his last eight fights and you tell me whether Brook has fought the guys he needs to have fought to get a world title shot: Carson Jones [twice], Hector David Saldivia, Matthew Hatton, Luis Galarza, Rafal Jackiewicz, Lovemore N’dou, and Philip Kotey.

Now you tell me where is the quality among Brook’s last 8 fights? I honestly don’t see one good contender among the best. To me, Carson Jones is a fringe contender at best. I’m talking bottom 15, and that guy was easily Brook’s best opponent of his entire nine-year pro career.

Next Saturday, October 26th, Brook will be facing former WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (34-1, 23 KO’s) at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Senchenko is a contender but he’s not considered one of the top contenders in the division. Sure, Senchenko is a former champion but he was considered a paper champion during his title as the WBA belt holder and he didn’t have to beat anyone good to pick up the belt and he surely didn’t defend his title against anyone good during his time as the champion.

If Khan does get the title shot against Mayweather, rather than Brook, it’ll be because Khan has faced much better opposition than Brook. Look at some of the guys that Khan fought during his career: Danny Garcia, Marcos Maidana, Breidis Prescott, Lamont Peterson, Zab Judah, Paul Malignaggi and Andriy Kotelnik. Those guys are all better than anyone that Brook has ever faced before and I rate them better than Senchenko.
