The real heavyweight battle

By Jamie Eskdale: Boxing fans are being denied the right to see some real exciting fights because of Promotional stables unwilling or just out right refusing to work together. Last night Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) battered Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s0 into submission to claim the WBO junior welterweight title.

We all know the main guy in the division is Danny Garcia. So after winning one of the major titles in the division, you would think the next logical step would be to challenge the main guy or at least try to build a path to do so.

Yet what we have seen instead is talk of a rematch. Now let’s get this straight as much as I enjoyed their battle last night, a rematch probably isn’t the best option for Provodnikov at the moment. A better option would be a fight with Lucas Matthysse with the winner taking on Danny Garcia.

This isn’t even being talked about anywhere because as much as they are all top names in the same division the fact they have different promoters and different tv networks kills the notion stone dead.

Watching the fight gave me an exhilarating high so why after the fight finished and upon waking this morning did I feel like banging my head against a brick wall?

I’ll tell you why, and bear with me as I must be careful how I word this. It is because the guys(no names mentioned) running the main promotional bodies will not do business with each other.

Now I know we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes and aren’t privy to all the details, but come on! This is more fights not happening because of ego.

And let’s not be fooled, ego is the main obstacle here. No one wants to give an inch in negotiations. Also when you tie in the tv networks linked to each stable then it makes what should be pretty straight forward even more of a minefield.

Is it really too much to ask that we want to see the best in each division face each other. If in the unlikely event anyone from Top Rank or GBP are reading this then pay attention.

We as boxing fans don’t care about what stable a fighter is affiliated to. We don’t care which TV network they’re contracted to. All we want to see is the best fights available. You have the power to make this happen and instead of self interest you should be willing to concede certain things in negotiations to make the best fights happen.

Now I feel like a broken down record here but this would be sorted in no time if we had a signular regulatory body governing the full sport to step in and end this petty feuding.

Can you actually imagine how much interest and money a joint mega promotion between Top Rank and GBP would actually generate? It would be absolutely huge and everyone involved would make a ton of money.

We’re constantly told that boxing is first and foremost a business so how come these great business minds haven’t come up with this simple solution?

Now I don’t mean a middle of the road card with one or two big names. I mean a huge mega card stacked from top to bottom with the biggest names and biggest fights available from both stables.

Can you imagine the possibilities. Even the thought of it gets me excited. The build up would be huge. With promotional tours all over the world.

Let’s hope someone breaks cover and makes the first move to making such a dream come true.
