Mayweather faces “The Chosen One” Canelo on Saturday

canelo00091By Dan Ambrose: It’s no secret that the red-haired, freckle-faced Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) has been picked out as “The Chosen One” by Golden Boy Promotions to be their next bankable pay-per-view attraction that they’re hoping will become a huge PPV star by beating boxing’s #1 PPV fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) this Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Golden Boy hopes that this will be a passing of the torch from Mayweather Jr. to their 23-year-old would be star Canelo. If Canelo can beat Mayweather it could mean a lot of money for Golden Boy for a long, long time if they match the red-haired Canelo carefully by keeping him away from certain fighters, and by continuing to put him in with welterweights instead of fighters that weight as much as him.

Mayweather Jr. could temporarily spoil Golden Boy’s plans by beating Canelo and making him look as foolish as he did Golden Boy’s other fighters Victor Ortiz and Robert Guerrero, to name just a couple. Canelo getting clowned by Mayweather Jr. won’t prevent The Chosen One from becoming a huge PPV star, but it’ll definitely slow down a little.

It won’t stop Canelo from realizing Golden Boy’s dreams for him because he’s still very young, and he’ll be able to wait out Mayweather Jr. and keep fighting long after Mayweather Jr. hangs up his gloves.

After Canelo’s loss on Saturday against Mayweather, Golden Boy will likely be very careful in whom they match Canelo up against in order to prevent him from taking another loss. This means that will likely see Golden Boy continue to put Canelo in with welterweights instead of junior middleweights or middleweights.

Canelo will likely be able to win for a long, long time if Golden Boy is careful with him. They obviously can’t put him back in with Austin Trout, because he’s already said that if he fights Canelo again, he wants it to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada. And I don’t think Trout would be agreeable to open scoring either, so that would change everything without open scoring and having the fight staged in Texas.

That’s why I don’t see Canelo giving Trout a rematch. Instead, if Canelo is going to face guys in his own division, it’ll be the likes of Ishe Smith, and possibly Miguel Cotto if he agrees to fighting Canelo. That’s about the only 2 legitimate junior middleweight fighters at 154 that I ever see Canelo facing again. I can see Canelo mostly defending his junior middleweight titles against welterweights like we saw when Canelo fought light welterweight Josesito Lopez in defending his WBC 154 title last September in 2012.
