Robert Guerrero wants Victor Ortiz next

ortiz4By Allan Fox: Former two division world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) says he wants to face former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) next if he’s open to taking the fight. Guerrero is hoping to use a victory over the inactive Ortiz to catapult him to another shot against Floyd Mayweather Jr. or a fight against one of the other world champions at 147.

The chances of Guerrero ever getting another fight against Mayweather are less than zero. Guerrero had his shot, he lost, and the fight didn’t bring in big bank for Mayweather. It’s over for Guerrero as far as Mayweather goes.

Guerrero said to RingTV “I want to fight Victor Ortiz, and that fight can be made since we both have the same promoter. I think that’s a fight that fans would want to see. If not him, then one of the champions at 147…I want a rematch [with Mayweather] once I earn it.”

At this point it’s probably not realistic for Guerrero to get a fight against Ortiz either. He’s lost his last two fights, and he’s been out of action since June of last year after breaking his jaw in two places in a 9th round stoppage loss to Josesito Lopez. Ortiz is expected to be back later this year against a still to be determined opponent, but it’s definitely not going to be against Guerrero in his first fight back coming off of the injury.

That would be a dumb move. Golden Boy Promotions won’t let that happen and neither will Ortiz’s adviser Al Haymon. When Ortiz does return, and it seems like he’s not in a hurry to get back in the ring fight now, it won’t be against a live body.

They’re likely to put him in with a fairly soft opponent so that Ortiz can get the rust out of his system and not be in a situation where he’s taking a huge risk. An active Ortiz would likely beat Guerrero as long as he stayed off the ropes and kept the action in the center of the ring, but it still wouldn’t be an easy fight for him because he would have to go the distance to beat him. Guerrero’s chin is too good for Ortiz to stop him.
