Macklin to be back on HBO in November

macklin45By Scott Gilfoid: Fringe middleweight contender Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) says he’ll be back in the ring fighting in November on HBO against an opponent still to be determined. Macklin, #11 WBA, was stopped in the 3rd round last Saturday night by WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

This was Macklin’s third defeat in his last four fights, and he’s kicking himself for using the wrong strategy against the hard hitting Golovkin.

Macklin feels that it would have had more of a chance to beat Golovkin if he had gone straight at him in the 1st round and thrown everything but the kitchen sink at him.

Macklin said to Livefight “I’ll be fighting back on HBO in November…In hindsight the way I fought him was the wrong way to fight him…I should have stood my ground more…I should have took the fight to him like Ricky Hatton did against Kostya Tszyu.”

I agree with Macklin that he needed to go right after Golovkin to have any chance at beating him. That’s what I said before the fight, but I guess he didn’t listen to me. You’re not going to beat a talent like Golovkin by running from him. All you do there is prolong the agony.

Macklin should have gone after Golovkin in the 1st round and thrown 100+ punches. He should have thrown nonstop punches in the first two rounds.

At least if Macklin had done that there would be a possibility that Golovkin might have been cut by the 3rd, and it could have been a much different story than what we saw last Saturday night with Macklin running for his life.

I wonder who Macklin will be fighting in November on HBO? I imagine it would be a fight that might have to be buried down in the card because I can’t picture HBO saying yes to Macklin as the co-feature for one of their cards after how he performed against Golovkin.
