Golovkin sees Macklin fight being tough for 7 rounds

349By Scott Gilfoid: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) expects his Irish challenger Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) to put up a struggle for the first 7 rounds in their fight on June 29th, but then get a lot easier from that point on.

Golovkin and Macklin will be fighting each other at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Golovkin said to Fightnews.com “It’s a difficult fight maybe the first seven rounds.”

I think Golovkin is giving Macklin a little too much credit in this fight because I can’t see it being a difficult fight for anything more than 3 rounds, and I don’t see that as being difficult. Golovkin has faced a harder puncher in Grzegorz Proksa last year and he destroyed Proksa by a 5th round TKO.

Proksa is a MUCH bigger puncher than Macklin and he was going right after Golovkin from the 1st round, but it resulted in Golovkin knocking him down in the 1st, 4th and 5th rounds.

Macklin has been saying that Golovkin will have problems with his power. If that’s the case then it means that Macklin intends on going after Golovkin from the 1st round of the fight. I wish Macklin a lot of luck if he does that because Golovkin will destroy him in 2 or 3 rounds and it won’t be difficult rounds, believe me.

Where Macklin could make it difficult is if he chooses to run from Golovkin for 7 rounds like how Gabriel Rosado did last January. Rosado was on his bike big time in that fight, and he only really did any fighting in the 5th round.

After that round, Rosado came out confident in the 6th and was staggered by Golovkin after getting hit with a big right uppercut. The was stopped in the next round as Rosado’s team decided to pull him out of the fight to keep him from taking more of a beating. As it was, Rosado was bloody and battered and looked terrible. I rate Rosado as a bigger puncher than Macklin.
