Ward Has No Choice, and rightfully so!

ward333By Rusty Nate: So the talk for the last few days has all been about the result of the weekends biggest clash between Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler.

A great fight to watch between two guys that can punch, take a punch, box and fight at very nearly even levels. Froch was of course the winner as we all know. The points decision was a pretty wide range from 7 rounds down to 2 rounds across the three judges. I think in the middle at 4 rounds to Froch was probably fair. He dominated Kessler for more of the fight and only seemed to get in trouble on the few occasions he slowed down to take a breather in certain rounds.

To be honest Kessler did look like a fighter that was coming to the down slide of his career whilst Froch looked like a fighter that had improved dramatically since the first fight and is definitely in his career prime right now!

I do tend to half agree with Lennox Lewis, Froch needs to improve on Saturday’s overall performance to beat Ward.

However, if Froch could maintain the boxing and energy level he showed in the first 3 rounds against Kessler then Ward would be in one hell of a fight. It would test Ward’s credentials as one of the P4P best fighters and I think it would also leave Froch in a position to retire comfortably regardless of the outcome of the fight.

The biggest problem that has arisen is where the fight happens. Obviously as the holder of two world titles Froch is in the driving seat just like every Champion in the past has been.

Ward has been quite vocal in claiming that a fighter can only be a star if he fights in America and so Froch should fight him there.

Well lets be serious about this, Froch is a name in America there is no doubt about that, otherwise we would not be having these discussions. He has fought there 3 times losing ONLY to Andre Ward. He was the only fighter in the Super Six that did not make an argument about traveling to America, Denmark and Finland in order to make the fights happen. He has proven that he can fight anyone anywhere in the world.

Ward has fought outside the USA once (the Caymens) and almost 95% of his fights in the USA have been in his home state of California. He made a claim that Atlantic city was a road trip for him because he had to get on a plane and travel cross country. It doesn’t change the fact that he was surrounded by American’s on the street, American’s in the hotels and American’s at the venue……he was still AT HOME in America, end of story!

If Ward really is worried about coming to Nottingham to fight (and I cant blame him) then fine, come to England and fight at Wembley. Come to Wales and fight at the Millenium. Its the same as Froch coming to the US and fighting you in another State!

I honestly do like Andre Ward, I am definitely more of a fan of the science and skill in boxing rather than the brawling and warriors. I respect both types of fighter and when they collide its amazing to see.  Ward is in no doubt P4P number 2 right now and will surely go straight in at number 1 when Mayweather is gone. I don’t want Ward to start destroying his reputation but suddenly starting to look like a home fighter that doesn’t want to go anywhere but America.

Mayweather lost a lot of global fan base and respect for the whole Pacquiao fight that never happened (not that it was all his fault) but that’s what happens in these situations. Fans choose their side and thats that. This Ward and Froch thing can one of two ways from my view.

1 – Ward realizes that he is not the Champion and shouldn’t be barking demands that he has no right make. He gets on with it, fights where ever they decide will best beneficial even if that means coming to the UK and he earns the respect of the American fans, the British Fan’s and the global neutral fan’s regardless of the result. He would also make a shed load of cash if they pack out Wembley!

2 – He keeps on demanding that a fight should happen in his country regardless of him having no titles to offer. Because of that the fight never happens and Ward will go down as the one that blocked the fight, of that I am sure. He has no way of coming off better in this situation if he doesn’t agree to fight the champion in his home country.

Unfortunately for Ward, Kessler has pretty much backed him in to a corner with out even realizing it when he told the world “I beat Carl in my country but I am a man of my word and a Champion so that meant  I had to come to England to prove that I could beat him in his own country as well”

That is the mark of a true warrior  and a true champion. He just wants to be seen as the Champion that cant be questioned for any reason!

I honestly hope that Ward chooses option 1, I  would personally love to see a rematch and if it happens at Wembley, or one of the other amazing Stadiums in the UK it will be great to go to.

I still personally believe Ward is too good for Froch (or any other SM Weight out there) but there is very little out there for Ward other than Froch and the event itself would make it all worth while. And this is boxing after all so a lucky punch is always just one mistake away.
