Mayweather-Guerrero: Robert needs a plan A to Z to beat Floyd

guerrero34By Dan Ambrose: WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) has been saying recently that he can adapt to anything that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) can do in the ring, and that he has several plans that he’s going to shift through on May 4th to find a way to beat the 36-year-old Mayweather in their pay-per-view fight on Showtime/CBS at the MGM Grand, Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

If Guerrero is going to win this fight, and I doubt that he will, he’s going to need every plan in the alphabet to get him the victory because he seems pretty basic in everything that he does in the ring. When Guerrero is walking his opponents down, like he did against Andre Berto last November, he stands upright and is slow and hittable.

That approach will be a fail against Mayweather. Guerrero can scratch that one off his list because it’s not going to work. If Guerrero’s plan B is to stand back and box like he did against Michael Katsidis , then that’s going to be a fail too because he’s too slow and will get picked off by Mayweather from the distance.

I have seen a plan C from Guerrero where he circles around the ring, but he’s so slow on his feet that there’s no way that will work against Mayweather. He moves like he’s got a set of 10 lb. ankle weights tied to each ankle and he’s not light on his feet. Those three plans won’t work for Guerrero, and he’s going to have to come up with something different.

If he had power he could fall back on using that to try and KO Mayweather, but Guerrero failed to carry his power up with him when he moved up from lightweight to welterweight last year. Guerrero is now just a light slapper that can’t break eggs. If he tries to KO Mayweather he’s going to end up looking silly because he’ll eat too many punches and likely end up knocked out himself.

I honestly don’t know what else Guerrero can do to win the fight because all of the basic strategies that a fighter can use to beat someone like Mayweather require some semblance of talent, and Guerrero just doesn’t have the kind of talent needed to get the job done.
