Matthysse looking past Dallas Jr, wants Danny Garcia

matthysse22By Allan Fox: WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30 KO’s) has his eyes on a big fight against WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia this year if he can get him to agree to fight him. Matthysse has a fight scheduled this Saturday night against Mike Dallas Jr. (19-2-1, 8 KO’s) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, The Joint, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

After that fight Matthysse wants Garcia in his next bout. The World Boxing Council has already ordered Garcia to fight Matthysse the end of the year, and if that fails to take place then Garcia will almost surely be stripped of his WBC title. He would still have his WBA belt, so there’s a possibility that he may choose not to fight Matthysse.

That may in fact happen because Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is talking about matching Garcia with former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan later this year. Schaefer hasn’t said anything yet about a Matthysse-Garcia fight, and that makes you wonder whether he’ll put that fight together.

It might be better for Golden Boy not to make the Matthysse vs. Garcia fight because one them would lose that would hurt Golden Boy. It might be better for Garcia to vacate the WBC title and then Matthysse can fight for the vacant WBC belt against one of the contenders like #1 WBC Dierry Jean, #2 WBC Roberto Ortiz or #3 WBC Denis Shafikov.

Golden Boy would then have two light welterweight champions at 140 instead of just one.
Matthysse will likely have little problems beating Dallas Jr. on Saturday night. This is kind of a mismatch in terms of talent and power. Matthysse is a much better fighter on paper and he’s the way more experienced fighter of the two. Dallas Jr. will have to really raise his game considerably if he doesn’t want to get blown out completely on Saturday night.
