wilder3434By Scott Gilfoid: The unbeaten heavyweight knockout Deontay Wilder (26-0, 26 KO’s) will be fighting this Saturday night in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Centro de Convenciones, Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico. His opponent still hasn’t been confirmed for the fight.

It was rumored that Wilder would be fighting journeyman Matt Greer, but that might not be happening. There’s still a possibility the talented 27-year-old Wilder could be facing a better quality fighter than Greer. He’s a fine opponent given that Wilder was put on the card a week ago, so you can’t expect Wilder to be facing talents like Chris Arreola, Johnathon Banks or Bryant Jennings on such short notice.

To get the good heavyweights, it takes a lot of time to set those fights. Wilder was just given a shot to stay busy before he starts taking some of the big names this year to get ready for his eventual title shot.

The 6’7” Wilder has been really opening the eyes of boxing fans with his amazing power. He fought recently against the big 6’7” Kelvin Price and he wowed the crowd with a devastating 3rd round knockout win last December on Showtime. That fight won Wilder a lot of followers because they saw the talent in this fighter when he finally unleashed his right hand. It kind of reminded me of watching a young Lennox Lewis around the time he was beating the likes of Razor Ruddock early in his career.

Wilder’s right hand looks a lot like Lewis’ but with more power. Wilder shuts you down when he connects with that right. I haven’t seen anyone in the heavyweight division right now that can match Wilder’s power. He’s punching on another level than the other heavyweights.

What’s really interesting about Wilder is that he’s got some flaws in his game right now with his defense, footwork, coordination, jab, and left hand, but his right hand washes away those flaws with a single stroke. He covers up those flaws because he can knock you out cold in the clinical sense with a single right hand shot. There’s no other heavyweights in the division that can do that like Wilder right now.
