It wasn’t a pretty fight to watch because Guerrero chose to smother Berto by taking the fight to the inside and keeping it there for 12 rounds. Berto fought off the ropes for the entire fight just as he did against Victor Ortiz, and it was a bad strategy then and it was bad strategy last night.

It looks like Berto can no longer fight in the center of the ring like he used to when he was younger. Berto is only 28, but he doesn’t seem to be able to fight as hard as he did when he was in his early 20s and was able to move around the ring, and throw a lot of punches.

Berto’s style now is one where he retreats to the ropes and fights with his back leaning on the ropes for 12 rounds. Guerrero could have backed up and used his reach to dominate Berto, but instead he opted to get in close and fight a grueling inside fight for the entire bout.

After the fight Guerrero said as quoted by RingTV “I’m here, let’s do this Floyd. I just beat a great former champ. I feel I’m the best and can’t be beat. I’m unstoppable.”

Guerrero definitely isn’t unstoppable. I think he can be beaten, but just not by Berto with his Mayweather shoulder roll that wasn’t working for him last night. I think Guerrero would lose to Kell Brook, Devon Alexander, Keith Thurman, Marcos Maidana, and I see Luis Carlos Abregu giving him a run for his money. But that’s neither here nor there right now, because Guerrero will likely get the Mayweather fight off of this victory because it’s the easiest fight out there for Mayweather right now among the choices offered up to him.

Mayweather’s not going to fight Manny Pacquiao or Tim Bradley, because both of those guys fight for Top Rank, and I doubt he’s ready to agree to fight guys promoted by them because he seems to be reluctant for some reason. Guerrero fights for Golden Boy Promotions, who Mayweather has a good relationship with, so it’s a fight that can get made.
