By Dan Ambrose: A fight between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and unbeaten IBO super middleweight champion Thomas Oosthuizen is still a possibility for January 19th at Madison Square Garden, in New York. According to Steve Kim, he says that he’s hearing that Ooszthuizen is asking for too much money for the fight to get made at the moment. However, there’s still a possibility that the fight can get made if the money is right.

The fight would be televised on HBO, and the undercard is expected to have WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido defending his title against unbeaten Mikey Garcia, if Garcia wins his fight this Saturday night against Jonathan Victor Barros at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Oosthuizen also fights this Saturday night against Fulgencio Zuniga in South Africa. Oozthuizen has to win that fight and look good in order to keep alive the chance of fighting against Golovkin.

Golovkin will have to move up in weight if he’s to fight the 6’4″ Oosthuizen because it might be all but impossible for Oosthuizen to melt down from 168 with his wiry frame. He simply doesn’t have the weight to lose on his already thin frame. If Oosthuizen were to take weight off it would likely be in the form of valuable muscle and I don’t think he can afford to let that take place.

Golovkin, 30, is really hurting for fights right now. He wants to fight important guys but he’s finding out how empty the 160 pound division is right now in terms of talent. There are some decent middleweights in Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Sergio Martinez and Peter Quillin, but getting them to fight him are next to impossible because he’s considered to be too much risk for the little reward in fighting him.

Golovkin wants to take his career in the fast lane by fighting only the best and looking to wipe them out one by one on HBO television.
