DeGale wants world-class opponent in March; Dirrell, Oosthuizen and Rodriguez are his best options

degale45By Thomas Cowan: British super middleweight contender James DeGale has announced he will be fighting on March 23, hopefully against a world class oppenent. DeGale is highly ranked with 3 out of the 4 major sanctioning bodies and needs to fight a world class fighter if he wants a title shot in 2013 or early 2014. Here’s how I see his options.

Thomas Oosthuizen looks like the best option for DeGale. The young South African is very highly-rated as a super-middleweight prospect and also holds the lightly regarded IBO title. Oosthuizen is unbeaten but hasn’t faced any opposition of great quality and I was disappointed to see him pass up a shot at IBF champion Carl Froch in 2012. DeGale has said he wants to fight in London and I think Oosthuizen could be willing to that this fight if the money is right because he’ll see the Brit as a beatable opponent who could boost his ranking and take him closer to a title shot.

Oosthuizen vs. Adonis Stevenson possible for Froch’s IBF 168 lb strap

stevensontBy Scott Gilfoid: With IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) showing no signs that he’s planning on defending his title against his #1 mandatory challenger Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16 KO’s), it’s looking like Stevenson will soon be facing unbeaten #5 IBF Thomas Oosthuizen (21-0-1, 13 KO’s) from South Africa, at least that’s according to goldengloves.co.za/boxing-news/action-hots-up-for-tommy-gun/.

The scenario would be that the 24-year-old Oosthuizen will face the power hitting Stevenson for Froch’s vacant title.

Thomas Oosthuizen talks about career and bright future at 168lbs

Image: Thomas Oosthuizen talks about career and bright future at 168lbsBy Ian Aldous: Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen (21-0-1) is establishing himself as a genuine force in the stacked super-middleweight division following six defences of his IBO world championship. The South African fighter has increased his international recognition with three fights on U.S soil in just over a year. This week Tommy took some time to talk with me about his blossoming career.

After an amateur career that spanned just 65 bouts with three defeats, twenty-four year old Tommy decided to turn professional at the age of just nineteen. It’s clear that the sport was in his blood from a very young age. “I was raised in boxing, boxing as an amateur since I was young. With my dad being a former champion (he held South African titles at junior-middleweight and middleweight), I was just raised in the sport since I can remember.” His fighting style defies that of someone with just 65 amateur fights. Watching him fight, you’d be sure he’d spent much more time on the amateur circuit.

Stevenson likely to fight Oosthuizen for IBF 168 lb title if Froch doesn’t step up

Image: Stevenson likely to fight Oosthuizen for IBF 168 lb title if Froch doesn't step upBy Scott Gilfoid: According to fightnews.ca, #1 IBF Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16 KO’s) will likely be facing #4 IBF Thomas Oosthuizen (21-0-1, 13 KO’s) in early 2013 if the current IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch chooses not to face Stevenson for his mandatory defense.

Stevenson beat Don George to become Froch’s mandatory challenger and Froch now has to fight Stevenson BEFORE he fights Lucian. Judging by what Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn has been saying about wanting the Bute fight first, it looks like the International Boxing Federation may have to strip Froch of his title if he opts not to fight Stevenson next. Hearn said he wants to try and get an exception from the IBF to steer around the dangerous punching Stevenson, but Stevenson’s promoter Yvon Michel doesn’t see the IBF letting that happen.

By Dan Ambrose: A fight between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and unbeaten IBO super middleweight champion Thomas Oosthuizen is still a possibility for January 19th at Madison Square Garden, in New York. According to Steve Kim, he says that he’s hearing that Ooszthuizen is asking for too much money for the fight to get made at the moment. However, there’s still a possibility that the fight can get made if the money is right.

Oosthuizen in tough fight against Zuniga on Saturday

Image: Oosthuizen in tough fight against Zuniga on SaturdayBy Dan Ambrose: IBO super middleweight champion Thomas Oosthuizen (20-0-1, 13 KO’s) faces a bigger hitter in Fulgencio Zuniga (25-5-1, 22 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Emperor’s Palace, Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa. The 6’4″ Oosthuizen needs a win in this fight against the 35-year-old Zuniga to keep moving forward towards a future world title shot against one of the champions.

Rodney Berman, the promoter for the 24-year-old Oosthuizen, told Supersport.com “Tommy can’t afford to muck about. This guy can crack and if Tommy isn’t at his best he’ll end up on the canvas.”

Oosthuizen fights Zuniga on Saturday

Image: Oosthuizen fights Zuniga on SaturdayBy Dan Ambrose: This Saturday night IBO super middleweight champion Thomas Oosthuizen (20-0, 13 KO’s) will be defending his title against Fulgencio Zuniga (25-5-1, 22 KO’s) at the Emperor’s Palace, Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa. This should be a tough but winnable fight for the 24-year-old Oosthuizen, who if he wins will find himself fighting Gennady Golovkin on HBO at Madison Square Garden.

That’s a fight that will be real test for Oosthuizen to show whether he’s got the talent to become one of the better fighters. Golovkin will be moving up in weight to take the fight, but he’s got crushing power that likely will carry up to 168 and give Oosthuizen problems if he can’t avoid Golovkin’s big shots.

By Allan Fox: The WBA stripped WBA Super World middleweight champion Daniel Geale for not agreeing to fight World Boxing Association (WBA) World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) after having been ordered to do so following Geale’s win over Felix Sturm. Golovkin will now be fighting either Edwin Rodriguez (22-0, 15 KO’s) or Thomas Oosthuizen (20-0-1, 13 KO’s) on January 19th at Madison Square Garden in New York, according to Dan Rafael.

Image: Gennady Golovkin vs. Thomas Oosthuizen on January 19th in New YorkBy Dan Ambrose: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) will be defending his title against unbeaten IBO super middleweight champion Thomas Oosthuizen (20-0, 13 KO’s) on January 19th, at New York’s Madison Square Garden, according to goldengloves.co.za.

Golovkin, 30, was hoping to fight World Boxing Association Super World middleweight champion Daniel Geale next, but Geale instead chose to fight Australian Anthony Mundine. This in turn led to the WBA quickly stripping Geale of his title. However, Golovkin now has an arguably better opponent in 6’4″ South African Oosthuizen, who has been impressing boxing fans in the United States recently with his wins on Showtime Sports.
