Image: David Price wants Chisora after Skelton boutBy Scott Gilfoid: British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price (14-0, 12 KO’s) is already looking past this Friday’s fight against 45-year-old Matt Skelton (28-6, 23 KO’s) to a bout that Price wants against former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (15-4, 9 KO’s) in 2013.

Price said to thesun.co.uk “Dereck is a fight that interests me for the simple reason that he is a good fighter.”

I wonder if the fact that Chisora has lost four out of his last five fights has anything to do with Price wanting to fight him. I can’t think of a worse opponent for Price to be looking to fight after his bouts against 41-year-old Audley Harrison and 45-year-old Matt Skelton.

Going from those guys into a fight against Chisora is just another case of more of the same with Price. Chisora has lost his last three fights and is badly struggling. Why on earth would Price want to fight a guy that is having the kinds of problems that Chisora is having? Price isn’t young. The guy is 29 going on 30, and should be fighting actual contenders, not fighters that are 45 or in this case losing over and over again. Price needs to follow the talented American Deontay Wilder’s lead by taking on an unbeaten fighter that is still relatively young like 6’7″ Kelvin Price.

Chisora has shown a good chin in losses to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, Tyson Fury and Robert Helenius. However, Chisora’s chin abandoned him big time in his 5th round knockout loss to former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye in July of this year. Chisora looked out of shape and overmatched against Haye.

I guess boxing fans should be happy that Price is mentioning Chisora’s name because I had heard Richard Tower’s name being mentioned as someone that Price might be interested in facing after the Skelton fight.

Price is really blowing his chance at moving up and getting a title fight against one of the Klitschkos while they’re still the champions, because by wasting time fighting the Harrisons and the Skeltons of the heavyweight division, Price is increasing the likelihood that he’ll never face one of the Klitschko brothers before they retire. Also, Price is allowing Deontay Wilder to mature and move past him on his way to a world title. Once Wilder is the champion, Price won’t be able to do much because Wilder is so much more athletic than him and he’ll likely KO Price when the time comes for them to fight.
