Price victory over Harrison proved nothing

Image: Price victory over Harrison proved nothingBy John F. McKenna (McJack): British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price (14-0, 12 KO’s) made quick work of the hapless Audley Harrison (28-6, 21 KO’s) on Saturday night, taking just 80 seconds to dispose of his latest heavyweight victim. Harrison, who as usual talked a good fight ahead of time, proved to be anything but a real challenge for Price. The fight or the lack thereof, bore striking similarities to Audley’s non-performance against then WBA heavyweight champion David Haye in November 2010.

In the Haye fight, Harrison had a look of fear and panic on his face and offered no resistance to the “Hayemaker” who stopped Audley in the 3rd round. The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) withheld a portion of Harrison’s purse in the Haye fight until an investigation could be held. The BBBC later relented and gave Audley his entire share of the purse.

Harrison had the same look prior to the fight last night, even displaying it as he made his way into the ring. For a period of time after the Haye fight boxing pundits questioned whether any promoter would risk his reputation by putting Harrison on another major boxing card.

Some of Price’s ardent fans see his easy win over Harrison as evidence that he is climbing the fistic ladder towards a title shot with one of the Klitschko’s. Of course the 29 year old Price and his team were pleased at his victory over Audley. But the reality is that last nights fight proved virtually nothing. The fact that David displayed good punching power against an opponent who is unwilling, or unable to mount any type of attack should not be construed as some British fans have suggested, that he is the heir apparent to Lennox Lewis. It remains to be seen how Price would fare against a legitimate opponent who does not cower at the beginning of hostilities and has the genuine intention of fighting back.

Last night Harrison once again gave the appearance of a fighter who really did not want to be there and was only present at the event to pick up a pay check. In fact Audley did not land a single punch on his way to another humiliating defeat. Hopefully the 40 year old former Olympic gold medalist will now retire to save himself from further embarrassment.

Price to some extent appears to have fallen into the trap of believing the hype that now surrounds him after his easy KO win over Harrison. David suggested that it may be difficult for him to land fights in the future because of the power he possesses.
