Image: Kellerman: Broner is a bigger puncher than MayweatherBy Scott Gilfoid: HBO expert analyst Max Kellerman sees former WBO super bantamweight champion Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) as a bigger puncher than Floyd Mayweather Jr., but not quite as good as him defensively. Kellerman is able to see differences between the two talents, and doesn’t see Broner as a copy-cat clone of Floyd like a lot of boxing fans think.

Speaking to thaboxingvoice.com, Kellerman said “He’s [Broner] a good defensive fighter but not quite as good as Floyd. In actuality, he’s a better puncher than Mayweather and maybe a better puncher than I think he knows he is.”

Kellerman went on to say that he thinks the 23-year-old Broner will be moved up to the top 10 in the pound for pound list if Broner can get past WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco on November 17th next month. Kellerman rates DeMarco really highly, and sees him as a taller and younger version of Daniel Ponce De Leon, a fighter who gave Broner a lot of problems in their fight last year in March. Broner won the fight, but he struggled with De Leon and won the fight based on his better accuracy.

It’s interesting to think of Broner as being a better puncher than Mayweather, but I think Kellerman is right. Just looking at the KO percentage that Broner is sporting compared to Mayweather suggests that Broner is definitely the bigger puncher. Whether that can continue to be the case when Broner fights at lightweight for a certain amount of times is still unknown. Mayweather was a big puncher when he fought at super featherweight, but this changed when he moved up in weight to welterweight.

The power didn’t travel with him. That could be the case with Broner once he moves up to welterweight. He’s a little smaller than Mayweather in height at 5’7′ compared to the 5’8″ Mayweather, but that’s not much of a difference in size.
