Image: Broner interested in fighting Rios or Alvarado after he beats DeMarco next monthBy Scott Gilfoid: Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) doesn’t want to be constricted to the lightweight division after he destroys WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (28-2-1, 21 KO’s) next month on November 17th at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. Broner, 23, says he’s interested in fighting from lightweight all the way up to junior middleweight in order to get the biggest fights possible.

While Broner has only been a pro for the last four years, Broner is already on the verge of becoming the next pay per view star for HBO. His last fight against Vicente Escobedo hauled in 1.4 million viewers on HBO, the high for Boxing After Dark for the year. Those kinds of stats are usually reserved for PPV stars and you have to figure the fans that tuned in for that fight were fans of Broner more so than Escobedo.

Broner told RingTV “I can go to 135, 140, 147, the right guy at 154. I can do a lot of things. Rios, Alvarado, those guys would be on my list.”

As for his fight with DeMarco next month, Broner said “I don’t see this guy really doing too much.”

I totally agree with Mr. Broner. I see DeMarco as another Escobedo type victim. In other words, DeMarco is going to be a punching bag on November 17th. I hope he comes ready to take huge shots all night on his chin because DeMarco is going to be getting pounded ceaselessly by Broner in this fight. It won’t be a fight. Broner is far too skilled for the tall, slow and limited DeMarco.

I’m hoping Broner at least waits for one more fight after he beats DeMarco before moving up to light welterweight. I’d like to see Broner fight WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns before Broner leaves the division. It’ll be good for Broner to show his stuff against Burns and put things in perspective by destroying him in two or three rounds to pick up another lightweight strap.

By no means should Broner waste his career staying at lightweight and fighting the obscure opposition at this weight, because it’s a dead division in terms of talent and big names. I guess that’s why there are so many less than spectacular champions at this weight. All the good fighters moved up to light welterweight long ago, leaving the titles to what’s left of the division.

I’m guessing by next year this time Broner will be a big PPV star and will be soon bringing in the big PPV numbers that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is enjoying now. I’d love to see how Broner would do against Manny Pacquiao before the Filipino fighter retires. Unfortunately with Broner and Pacquiao fighting for different promoters it’s probably all but impossible for this fight to be made.
