Mayweather: Pacquiao won’t get a 50-50 split with me; he doesn’t do the same numbers

Image: Mayweather: Pacquiao won't get a 50-50 split with me; he doesn't do the same numbersBy Chris Williams: If Manny Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum are hoping they’ll be getting a 50-50 purse split with Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year when and if they get the Money man in the ring they can forget all about that dream because Mayweather just shot it down completely in an interview at the Hot97 FM NY.

Mayweather said this as quoted by Yahoo Sports News: “Actually, we don’t do the same type of numbers, so how can we split? We don’t draw the same type of money.”

There it is. Arum can forget all about putting his cash cow Pacquiao in with Mayweather Jr. next year unless Arum and Pacquiao are willing to take considerably less than a 50-50 deal to get the fight made. My guess is Pacquiao will be very lucky if he can get a 65-35 deal with Mayweather. That’s about all I can see Pacquiao getting after his dismal loss to Tim Bradley last June and his 700,000 pay per view buys that the fight generated.

While Pacquiao was getting beaten by Bradley in a low PPV fight, Mayweather looked sensational in defeating WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto in a fight that generated 1.5 million PPV buys, roughly twice the amount of buys that Pacquiao’s fight with Bradley brought in.

After all that there’s no way on earth that Arum can come to the bargaining table for a fight with Mayweather asking for a 50-50 deal. He’ll get laughed out of there and sent packing if he tries that bit. And the thing is, Pacquiao and Arum almost surely won’t accept anything but a 50-50 deal.

As such, Pacquiao will likely continue to play musical chairs with Arum’s gang of three – Miguel Cotto, Tim Bradley, and Juan Manuel Marquez – fighting them one by one over and over again until he retires. I’m just wondering how many times Pacquiao can go around the table to fight each one of these guys before the boxing public gets officially sick of it and he gets diminishing returns.
