In a workout at the Fairfield Sports Center with his trainer Freddie Roach, Chavez Jr. showed a lot of movement with Roach, circling the ring constantly and attacking with in and out patterns.

However, what struck me was how big Chavez Jr. still looks with such a short period of time to go before the fight. He looked like he’s weighing in the mid-180s easily. This is possibly normal for him because he’s been deydrating down from 180 to make the 160 pound weight limit for his fights as of late and then rehydrating back up to 180 in the 24 hours before the fight. But Chavez Jr. looks huge right now and if he goes into the ring with that kind of size it’s going to be tough on Martinez.

I liked Chavez Jr’s movement and seemed pretty light on his feet as he circled around the ring and attacked Roach. I’m not sure whether Chavez Jr. can keep that kind of movement up under fast paced conditions of a real fight, though. When you’re that heavy and have to take off a ton of water weight and put it back on in a short period of time there’s a potential that Chavez Jr. will fade later in his fight with Martinez.

There’s also the potential that Chavez Jr. could experience cramping from the affects of depleting his body of water in the days before the weigh-in. Even when you put water back into your body to get back up in weight, you still can get the affects of your system still being in shock from the massive water loss. It’s like being stranded in the desert for several days to where you lose a massive amount of water weight.

Sure, you can put it back on in 24 hours but you might not feel good if you’re asked to fight a 12 round bout at a fast pace against someone that’s using movement and landing big shots against you.
