Wladimir needs to step it up a level after Thompson win

Image: Wladimir needs to step it up a level after Thompson winBy Jason Kim: IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (58-3, 51 KO’s) did an exceptional job of blowing away Tony Thompson (36-3, 24 KO’s) last Saturday night in a 6th round TKO victory in Berne, Switzerland.

It was a great performance from Wladimir in showing he can beat fighter almost as big as him without getting hit. However, the fight was a mismatch just like his previous bout against Jean Marc Mormeck, and it was another example of Wladimir blowing out an older fighter past his best.

Now that Wladimir has got those two easy fights under his belt, it’s time for him to step it up against a fighter at in his early 30s and able to to punch a little. It would be nice to see Wladimir face someone like Chris Arreola, Kubrat Pulev or Denis Boytsov next. The Arreola fight isn’t all that interesting because Arreola hasn’t kept himself as relevant option due to his weak opposition since losing to Wladimir’s brother WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko back in 2009.

Arreola has won seven straight fights since losing to Tomasz Adamek in 2010, but none of the fighters have been good enough for him to get anyone excited about seeing him fight for a title again. Still, Arreola may get the fight anyway because the up and coming heavyweights – Seth Mitchell, Tyson Fury, David Price and Deontay Wilder – aren’t ready to fight him yet. That leaves Arreola almost by default unless Wladimir wants to face one of the European heavyweights like Boytsov or Pulev. Sadly, about anyone would be a drastic improvement over the last two guys that Wladimir has faced. He could literally fight anyone in the top 15, and we’d likely see a better fight.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Wladimir fight Bryant Jennings or Alexander Ustinov. Those would be interesting fights. Jennings has really long arms and can put his punches together real well, whereas Alexander is huge at 6’7″ 300 pounds and would present problems for Wladimir because of his size.
