Image: Klitschko vs. Charr: A nightmarish match-up for VitaliBy Jason Kim: With all the mismatches that WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (44-2, 40 KO’s) has been involved with in the past four years it’s really disappointing to see him stoop to the level of facing Manuel Charr (21-0, 11 KO’s) in what could be the 41-year-old Vitali’s last fight of his career on September 8th at the Olimpiyskiy, in Moscow, Russia.

The next month after this fight takes place, in October, Vitali will be taking part in the Parliament elections in Ukraine and it’s possible he could get elected to a political position at that time. If Vitali gets the job, he’s said he might retire from the sport in order to devote all of his time on politics in Ukraine. What makes this really disappointing is that Vitali hasn’t really had a decent fight since making his comeback in 2008. He’s beaten guys like Samuel Peter, Alberto Sosnowski, Juan Carlos Gomez, Kevin Johnson, Shannon Briggs, Chris Arreola, Odlanier Solis, Dereck Chisora and Tomasz Adamek, but none of those have big fights like Vitali’s bouts against Corrie Sanders and Lennox Lewis in the first part of his career.

The Charr fight is perhaps even worse than of Vitali’s other opponents during his comeback because, unlike the guys that Vitali has fought in the past four years, Charr doesn’t have one strong feature in his game. Not one. Charr is slow, easy to hit, not a big puncher and unskilled defensively. He’s unbeaten to be sure, but those wins are 3rd tier opposition, not quality fighters. Charr has had a couple of close calls in some of his bouts, and it’s disappointing that the World Boxing Council has him ranked #7 off of a bunch of nothing wins.
