Khan: I’d box Danny Garcia in a rematch; I’d fight him differently

Image: Khan: I'd box Danny Garcia in a rematch; I'd fight him differentlyBy William Mackay: The sting of his 4th round TKO loss to Danny Garcia last weekend seems to have knocked some sense into Amir Khan’s head, as he now says he would choose to box Garcia if/when they ever fight again in the future.

It’s too bad Khan is only now coming to the realization that he fought a dumb fight, because he should have listened to his trainer Freddie Roach when he kept telling him to box Garcia and not stand in front of him.

Khan told the Guardian.co.uk “I’d just take my time. I would take a step back and just start boxing and seeing things more instead of rushing and taking loads of shots. Why fight like an amateur? It was in the back of my mind that I shouldn’t do this but then I thought it’s working for me so I’m going to stick with it.”

Khan should have realized this a long time ago, way before the Garcia fight. It’s sad that it’s only now come to him that he needs to box instead of slugging it out. Things always look easier in hindsight, but that doesn’t mean that Khan would necessarily find success against Garcia even if he chose to box. Khan tried to box at times in his loss to Lamont Peterson and his win over Marcos Maidana.

Things still weren’t easy because they chased him down and forced Khan to fight for survival. Khan’s stamina would come into play if he chose to box an opponent for the full 12 rounds, and he would have to come up with a method to somehow conserve strength while at the same time running to keep from getting knocked cold again.
