Image: Haye: Chisora needs a good hiding and I'm going to do itBy Allan Fox: Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) says he isn’t all that concerned with his boxing legacy going into his fight tonight against Dereck Chisora (15-3, 9 KO’s) at Upton Park in London. All Haye cares about is punishing Chisora for what he feels is obnoxious behavior both in and out of the ring.

By now everyone is already aware of the things Chisora did while trying to hype his fight with WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko last February. Those things – spitting in Wladimir Klitschko’s face, slapping Vitali Klitschko, brawling with Haye at the post-fight press conference – led to Chisora having his boxing license suspended by the British Boxing Board of Control. Haye sees himself as the one to punish Chisora for his past behavior.

Haye said to thesun.co.uk “Fighting Chisora is not about my legacy, it is about getting out there and beating up someone who needs a good hiding. Dereck has been convicted of a lot of things – of so many different things – yet has never been punished.”

Haye is going to try and take matters into his own hands tonight by going after Chisora and taking him out quick. Haye probably won’t be able to slowly punish Chisora because if this fight goes into the deeper rounds, Haye could find himself in a life and death bout against a fighter that outweighs him by 40 pounds. Chisora is an excellent pressure fighter, one of the best in the heavyweight division.

Nigel Benn noted that after watching WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko struggle against Chisora last February. This suggests that Haye won’t be able to punish Chisora unless he does awfully quick before the Chisora train has warmed up and built up some momentum. Haye is technically a heavyweight, but 210, he’s probably closer to a cruiserweight. He’s going to be facing a super heavyweight tonight against Chisora and that could get in the way of Haye punishing Chisora the way he wants to.
