By Allan Fox: During Friday’s weigh-in, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero shoved his opponent unbeaten welterweight contender Selcuk Aydin after Aydin made the mistake of putting his fist a little too close to Guerrero’s face. Guerrero quickly pushed away Aydin’s fist and then shoved him hard. The skirmish was quickly broken up by the two fighters’ training team.

Guerrero, who is moving up two divisions for this fight, will be fighting Aydin on Saturday night at the HP Pavlilion in San Jose, California. Guerrero weighed 145.75 pounds at the weigh-in, whereas Aydin came in a little heavier at 146.5.

Guerrero looks a lot more solid at this weight compared to when he was fighting at at 130 and 135. However, it remains to be seen whether the extra weight will translate into added power for the 29-year-old southpaw Guerrero. He’s coming off of serious shoulder surgery on his left rotator cuff, and fighters who undergo that type of surgery rarely are ever able to regain full strength. Vitali Klitschko had surgery on his left shoulder a decade ago, and he was able to continue to fight effectively. However, it was his weak side and not his main punching side that was affected.

Aydin looks a little more solid than Guerrero, and no doubt will almost surely be the bigger puncher tomorrow night. Guerrero has to focus on his boxing skills, because that’s what’s made him such a good fighter.

Guerrero has been calling out Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the past year, and few people have taken him seriously because he calling Mayweather while fighting as a lightweight. However, if Guerrero can get past Aydin, people will take him a little more serous. Perhaps not serious enough, because Mayweather is more focused on facing fighters with a large fan base and not just skilled opponents.

Guerrero still won’t be a popular fighter no matter how good he looks on Saturday, so a fight against Mayweather is probably out of the question. The winner of Saturday’s bout will capture the WBC interim welterweight title, which technically should give them a chance to fight Mayweather in the future. But it’s probably meaningless because Mayweather probably isn’t going to bother to fight either of these guys because there’s no demand for him to.
