Image: Eddie Hearn: I won’t rush Kell BrookBy Mark Havey: It is undoubtedly true that Kell Brook (27-0, KO’s 18) is a special talent. Carson Jones (34-8-2, KO’s 24) has had a tough career and was mismatched early, hence his suggestive record. But he is on a 8 fight winning streak.

Eddie Hearn, Brook’s promoter told sky sports “I know everyone wants Kell to go and fight Floyd Mayweather tomorrow but the guy is 26 years old” he went on to say “there is no rush. I want to make sure we are in a position this year for a world title. We are not prepared to take two or three fight options for small money” what Eddie Hearn is saying is that he wants to have Brook in the mandatory position rather than a voluntary one.

Anyone that knows me will confirm that I am a huge fan Eddie Hearn, I even went as far as to say that Matchroom sport is the future of British boxing. I still believe that. Hearn doesn’t mind matching his fighters hard. He doesn’t protect them. He puts on brilliant cards. The fact that sky has picked his stable over the other British promoters is a statement. But in regards to Kell Brook the time is now. I don’t blame him for wanting to have some control over the terms of his fighters possible future title bout. But he needs to grab the chance when it comes. He is only 26 years old? He should be a world champion by now. Mayweather and Pacquiao had both won multiple titles and conquered multiple weight divisions by that age. I am not knocking Brook as I think he is world class. But he and his team seem to think he has more time than he does. I think that in most cases, 30 is a good age to retire. There are boxers who defy that and even get better after 30. But those are few and far between.

First Kell Brook needs to come out shining this Saturday when he faces the dangerous Carson Jones in their welterweight clash. It is a good fight. Brook is classy and skillful, plus unbeaten. Jones is on a winning streak and appears to be bursting with confidence. I think Kell Brook will win spectacularly but it will be interesting to see how he reacts if dragged into the trenches. Brooke has barely lost a round and has never looked like he might lose.
