Should Audley Harrison continue fighting?

Image: Should Audley Harrison continue fighting?By Ashley Gibson: Audley Harrison is perhaps the biggest waste of talent in British boxing history. Olympic gold medalist, tall, rangy and a southpaw and a boxing pedigree, surely a mix for a terrific fighter? Well, Harrison breaks the mold.

The heavyweight Olympian has recently won his fight against little known Ali Adams, a fight that has done Harrison no real good and has not in any way enhanced his reputation or revitalized his career. He has shown that he is definitely not a world class fighter in losing to Haye without throwing a punch and at the present moment certainly wouldn’t give British champion David Price anything to worry about.

So where next for Harrison? David price has bigger fish to fry Tyson fury is hoping to land a potential top ten fight in the coming months and Chisora is already up there. Obviously there are the second tier fighters such as Sam Sexton and John McDermott but the effect would be the same as the Adams fight. Pointless.

Harrison hasn’t really faced any dangerous opponents excluding David Haye, and has had his hands full with the likes of journey man Michael Sprott so what could he offer to the heavyweight community.

Personally I can’t see a reason for Harrison to continue other than to earn money which will ultimately result in Harrison sharing the same label as his rival Sprott. He got his title fight with Haye because of their rivalry and he won’t be getting an opportunity like that from the two Ukrainian champions or Alexander Povetkin.

Audley faces a catch 22 situation. Retire now with nothing to show for his care or continue to fight nobody’s and become a Olympic gold medalist journeyman. Which ever way he goes he is doomed. He does not posses the skills to win a title even at domestic level, however I can’t see him hanging up the gloves anytime soon. Even though, give me a reason why he shouldn’t?
