Audley Harrison needs to put up or shut up

audley2122By Steve Davis: After Reading reports that Audley Harrison has called out Dereck Chisora for a future fight, I just had to put pen to paper. Why in the world does Audley Harrison do this to himself and boxing, time and again he calls out fighters gets beat, retires, makes a comeback, calls someone else out, then gets beat again.

It wouldn’t be so bad if he called these fighters out and gave them a decent fight. Just look at the evidence – David Haye L Ko 3, David Price L Ko 1, Deontay Wilder L Ko 1. Hardly the form to call anyone out. It seems that Harrison just wants the payday. Chisora on the other hand hasn’t fought at a high level recently apart from the Malik Scott fight, a fight Chisora was losing and to be honest it shouldn’t have been stopped in his favour.

So for Chisora it would make sense. Harrison is a named fighter and it helps pad out Chisora’s record until a big fight comes along, but let’s get to the main point I’m trying to make. Audley Harrison needs to stop calling any fighter out and if he is serious about making a comeback. He needs to start from the bottom, back to basics. Fight novices, journeymen regular and often, in the same way that George Foreman did in the nineties. Get some wins under his belt and see how it goes. Let the fans recognize that he is serious, let them judge his process and see if they think he deserves a fight against an opponent like Chisora, because as it stands he deserves nothing.

Harrison had a good jab and not a bad right hand. What he lacked was motivation and a true grit to succeed. It seemed that just by getting into the ring, he thought that he would someday become world champion. Well he has learnt the hard way that it doesn’t work that way, but yet it seems he hasn’t learnt from these lessons. It is clear at this point that this proposed fight should not happen until Harrison proves that he has the desire and motivation to make a creditable comeback and stop making a fool out of himself and boxing. Harrison should either stay retired or make creditable comeback and stop looking for one more big payday because at the end of the day boxing owes him nothing. He owes the sport of boxing.
