Khan: I’m possibly two fights away from a Mayweather bout

Image: Khan: I'm possibly two fights away from a Mayweather boutBy William Mackay: Despite having been beaten in his last fight by Lamont Peterson last December, former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) sees himself as possibly two fights away from a mega bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2013.

In other words, Khan appears to be looking past his scheduled July 14th opponent WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia to the Mayweather bout.

That’s a big mistake on Khan’s part because if he can’t even beat Lamont Peterson, a fighter that was easily beaten by Tim Bradley, then how can Khan be thinking he’ll get past Garcia. I see Garcia and Peterson as being essentially the same in ability. Garcia is a better puncher and he puts his punches together a lot better than Peterson.

Khan told SKy Sports News “There’s a lot of talk about a fight with Floyd Mayweather…I’m going to take care of him [Garcia] then move up to 147. Then maybe I’ll have one more fight at 147 before I go on to the big, big names like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.”

I wonder if anyone ever sat Khan down and told him that just because he wishes he wants to get a fight against those guys doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll get them. Khan seems way too overconfident for a fighter that just got beat. Maybe he has forgotten that it was Peterson who won and not him.

Whatever the case, I seriously doubt that Mayweather has in mind a fight against Khan, even if Khan can get past Garcia and whatever likely scrub that he’s put in with when he moves up to 147. You know and I know that Khan likely won’t be matched against anyone dangerous when he moves up in weight to the welterweight division.

At best, I see him facing someone with zero power like Paulie Malignaggi, the WBA welterweight champion, or maybe 40-year-old Shane Mosley. It won’t be anyone with power because Khan is too vulnerable. We’ve seen that in his fights against Marcos Maidana and Breidis Prescott, and we’ve also seen that he can’t fight on the inside or handle pressure well in his fight against Peterson.
